NEW MARKET — After trailing the Western Boone Stars the entire first quarter, the Southmont Mounties turned the tide and led the Western Boone Stars for the final three quarters for a dominating 60-29 win.
Western Boone jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first, but the Mounties were able to end the quarter only down three. Mountie Coach Dan Burkman called a quick timeout in the second quarter and saw his team come out and take the lead and never looked back. It was the win the Mounties they have been looking for the last couple of weeks.
“We needed the win,” Burkman said. “It demonstrates what I have been telling the girls the last couple of weeks. We are getting better, but we just weren’t getting that win. Tonight it showed.”
Southmont sophomore, Layla Gomez, took control in the second quarter with 10 points for the Mounties. She ended the game with 18 points. The third quarter was all Mountie freshman, Ella Barry, who had 15 of the Mounties 20 points. Barry led all scorers with 27 points.
“We looked very poised and under control on offense tonight,” said Burkman about the difference in this game to the previous meeting with the Stars. “We were relaxed and confident tonight. Our half court offense was doing well tonight. Our energy in our full-court press just really gave them fits.”
The Mountie defense caused the Stars to turn over the ball 27 times.
The Mounties improve to 4-9 on the season and are 1-1 in the Sagamore Athletic Conference. The Mounties are off until Jan. 7 when they travel to Riverton Parke. The Stars fall to 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in the Sagamore Athletic Conference.
