GREENCASTLE — The Southmont Mounties advance to the Class 2A sectional final for the first time since 2014 with a 66-44 win over the Greencastle Tiger Cubs on Friday.
Sophomore Molly Williams started the Mounties off early with two steals that she turned into a quick four points.
“Molly’s defense was superb,” said Southmont Coach Dan Burkman. “She was like a little gnat out there pestering Greencastle all night. I’m sure Greencastle was ready to be done with Molly.”
The Mounties held a 15-8 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 35-21 at half. During the first half of play, Mountie freshman Ella Barry broke the single season field goal record held by Angie Flick.
Greencastle didn’t quit and hung around with the Mounties in the second half, cutting the lead to single digits. The Mounties responded with a full-court defense and took advantage of Greencastle turnovers.
“It’s good to get the win,” Burkman said. “It was a very strange game. We missed some easy baskets and made some bad decisions on passes. I’m proud of the girls because they stuck with it and pulled it out.”
The Mounties had three girls hit double digits in scoring. Layla Gomez led with 14 points, Barry 12, and Williams with 10.
Southmont faces Parke Heritage for their first sectional championship since 2014.
“We definitely have a challenge in front of us, but I know our girls will be up to it,” Burkman said.
Game time is at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at Greencastle.
