GBB Roundup: Mounties and Mustangs pick up first win, Chargers fall in season opener

Mounties win home opener

Southmont girls basketball picked up a win in their home opener Saturday afternoon against Clinton Central 45-27. The Mounties got out to an 11-0 lead before the Bulldogs used an 8-0 run of their own to trail 11-8 after the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs would trail by just four points entering the final period of play but a 10-0 run by Southmont gave them a 36-22 lead and they never looked back, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-5.

Belle Miller put together her second straight double-double to lead all scorers with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Dori Fredrerick added 11 points in the Mountie win.

Southmont (1-1, 0-1 SAC) will be back in action Tuesday as they host the North Vermillion Falcons (0-1).

Young Mustangs get in the win column

Fountain Central hosted Frankfort Saturday evening. After dropping their first two games of the season, the young Mustangs were able to get their first win of the season with a 42-36 win.

Fountain Central trailed 11-7 after the opening quarter but took a 19-18 lead into the half held the advantage for the remaining of the game.

Fresman Brailey Hoagland had a team-high 15 points for the Mustangs to go along with seven rebounds and three steals. Hannah Prickett and Larissa Bowers each chipped in seven, while Katie Brown and Jerzi Hershberger each had five.

Fountain Central improves to 1-2 on the season and will travel to Clinton Central Tuesday evening.

Chargers fall in season opener

North Montgomery traveled to Rockville for their season opener Saturday night against Parke Heritage. A physical contest saw the Chargers and Wolves all knotted up at 19-19 at the half, but the Wolves came out on fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Chargers 25-11 to hold on for a 53-42 win.

Katie Rice led all scorers in the game for the Chargers with an 18-point 11 rebound effort. Hadley Broadwater added in eight, Piper Ramey 6, and Madi Welch and Lydia Dugard each had five.

The Wolves had three in double figures led by Bethany Wilson’s 16. Emma Simpson recorded 12 points and Grace Ramsay had 14.

North Montgomery (0-1) will be back in action Tuesday evening for their home opener against International. That game can be heard on Thunder 103.9.
