Southmont defeats Terre Haute North in match play

The Southmont girl's golf team defeated Terre Haute North in match play on Monday evening at the Crawfordsville Country Club.

The Mounties won 6 1/2 to 2 1/2 and outshot Terre Haute North 198-202 in stroke play as well.

Erin Williams led the Mounties with a 48, while Carson White shot a 50, and Logan Berrisford fired a 51.

Lexi Rusk shot a 52, Bailey Thompson a 55, and Taylor Grino a 49. Macie Shirk fired a 52, and Mandy Rogers a 63.

Just two days after winning the Southmont Invite, the Mounties saw their score increase on the front-nine at CCC, but competition is heating up within the roster for the five varsity slots.

"This is the first year that we've really had some competition," Southmont coach Bill Whalen said. "And it's fun because it makes them nervous in practice and I like that because it makes them play hard in practice."

Whalen says competition will continue in practice to decide the roster spots. Southmont is at home against Danville on Thursday at 5 p.m. before traveling to the Zionsville Invite on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Golf Club of Indiana.

Work still needs to be done for the Mounties, but there is still a lot of golf to be played.

"Our iron play seems to be horrible," Whalen said. "I don't know what it is, it's like they turn it off and turn it on. We are just up and down right now, and we've got to find some consistency in our iron play. I've said this quite a bit and we need to hit greens and give ourselves a chance to make more birdies than we have been."

Maxwell leads North past Attica and Seeger

Chloe Maxwell was the meet medalist with a low score of 45 in North Montgomery's defeat of Attica and Seeger on Monday evening at Rocky Ridge. The Chargers fired a 201, Seeger a 217, and Attica a 247.

Morgan Swick fired a 48, while Grace Littell and Abbie Horn each fired 54s, while Grace Shrader a 61, Ella Stultz a 65, and Maggie Yeager a 66.

North Montgomery is back in action on Tuesday at home against Covington.
