Mountie tennis continue late season surge with county win

NEW MARKET — Southmont boys tennis is really starting to round into form in the last week of the regular season. Tuesday the Mounties notched their fifth straight win by defeating county rival North Montgomery 5-0.

The win for the Mounties sees their record sit at 10-5 and 3-1 in the Sagamore Conference. Adam Cox defeated Owen Utterback at one singles 6-0, 6-0 while Luke Tesmer secured a 6-0, 6-1 win at two singles. Harrison Haddock was victorious over Alex Chapman 7-5, 6-3 at three singles.

At one doubles the duo of Chayce Howell and Mason hall took care of Brookes Walters and Beckett Martin 6-2, 6-2 and rounding out the wins of the Mounties was Austin Foley and Gavin Downey at two doubles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Haze Kashon and Nate McCoy.

“We’re starting to play better and are starting to see of our attitudes change,” Southmont coach Nathan Poynter said. “I’m hoping that our kids are beginning to be more adamant about winning and see the senior mentality with a lot of our guys in these last couple of matches. We have to continue to play hard, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing. They know that nothing is just given to them and for the most part I think we’re coming around on those things.”

With sectional play beginning next week, the two county rivals could see each other again on the Crawfordsville courts. Assistant coach Steven Baldwin knows that his team will use this experience against their county rival to help better them for the post-season.

“It’s a matter of our guys coming in with some confidence and knowing that they can compete against a team like Southmont,” Baldwin said. “At one singles tonight Owen was very competitive despite the score saying 6-0, 6-0. At two doubles we took them to a tie-break and overall at both doubles spots we stayed competitive there also. After a disappointing match yesterday (4-1 loss to Western Boone,” I thought we came out with a different level of intensity and that’s what you love to see in a team.”

North Montgomery concludes the regular season on Thursday when they host Attica.

Southmont also concludes the regular season on Thursday when the Mounties make the trip to Lebanon.
