While high school spring sports seem to be in serious doubt, there is one thing that is certain.
Southmont has dominated the county in sports this season.
Here’s a look back at how the Mounties have all but secured their second straight Journal Review County Chase.
Southmont won fall county titles in boys tennis, girls golf, girls soccer, and volleyball.
On Jan. 25 the Mounties left little doubt in their county reign with a fierce comeback over Crawfordsville in girls’ basketball and an upset win over the Athenians in boys’ basketball to claim two more county titles. Southmont also won winter county championships in wrestling and girls swimming.
The Mounties have not finished last in a county contest this season.
Southmont leads the way with 44 points, while Crawfordsville is second with 26, and North Montgomery has 14.
The Athenians have claimed county titles in boys and girls cross country, boys swimming, and won their first gymnastics county crown since 1998.
North Montgomery’s lone county championships came back in the fall when they won the boys soccer and football titles. The Chargers have failed to win a county contest in eight sports this season.
It is still possible for Crawfordsville to catch Southmont in the standings, but the Athenians would have to win every spring county title and North Montgomery would have to defeat Southmont in nearly every sport as well.
On paper that seems almost impossible. The Chargers have long county streaks in both boys and girls track and field, while Southmont is poised to continue its reign in softball.
The latest as of Thursday night from Governor Holcomb puts students back into classrooms and on ball fields no earlier than May 1.
