LINDEN — Southmont pounded out 17 hits in an 18-6 Sagamore Conference and county win over North Montgomery on Thursday.
The Mounties broke a 4-4 with a three-run third and busted the game open with five runs in the fifth and six more in the seventh.
“Ramey (North pitcher) pitched well and threw strikes and made us put the ball in play and try and hit it hard,” Southmont coach Dan Taylor said. “I’ll tell you the thing that I took away, is it’s a really great performance by North and it required some of our best effort.”
Hanna Nichols collected four hits to lead the Mounties, while Brady Spencer had three hits and drove in five runs. Anna Stokes also had three hits, while Taylor Grino and Chelsea Veatch each had two hits. Veatch and Elizabeth Conkright both drove in a pair.
Kyndale Rice pitched a complete game for the Mounties, striking out four and allowing just four earned runs.
Southmont had a pair of errors during North Montgomery’s three-run first, but were perfect the rest of the way.
“We are really solid,” Taylor said. “Our fielding percentage has climbed up all year long, and I feel like we are making some good plays.”
The Chargers got a pair of hits from Jaymie Freeman, Blair Nichols, and Faith Shirar, while Nichols and Shirar each drove in runs.
“They were obviously pumped for the seniors, and they were ready and locked in,” North Montgomery coach Rob Earley said. “We didn’t quit and we didn’t give up.”
The Chargers celebrated seniors, Mallory Morehouse, Rachel Smith, and Breanna Dulin.
“Means a lot personally, because they were in the first group I started with as sophomores,” Earley said of his seniors.
Southmont is 15-5 and closes Sagamore Conference play with a 10-4 mark. North Montgomery is 5-19 and 2-12 in league play.
