Mounties looking for breakthrough season

Posted

NEW MARKET — Southmont has been close to an illustrious sectional title the last few seasons including a season ago when they fell to county rival Crawfordsville 3-2, but just hasn’t been able to break through. This is the year that the Mounties are hoping to bring home the school’s first sectional crown since 1996.

“We’re looking to pick up right where we left off a season ago,” Mountie coach Rob Reimondo said. “We have strong senior leadership back with Bailey Barker, Dori Frederick, Chaney Scott, and Emma Mitchell.”

Reimondo has especially high hopes for Frederick and Barker who each played key roles a season ago as well.

While the Mounties do have a lot of experienced upperclassmen, their sophomore class is another bright spot that Reimondo is excited to watch develop.

“We have five very strong sophomores in Hanna Long, Marley Jones, Kela Johnson, Alexa Bradley, and Courtlyn Carpenter,” he said. “Hanna is consistent and more experienced this year and Marley is a heavy hitting athlete and when she’s on, look out.”

A season ago Southmont saw their county rivals claim the county and sectional titles. This year they believe it’s their time to shine. The Mounties won’t have to wait too long to look to get revenge against the Athenians. The two county rivals will meet up in the Mounties second match of the season on April 12 at Southmont. Southmont’s first match of the season is set for April 6 against McCutcheon, also at home.
