Week 4 Football Preview

Mounties looking to remain perfect against Hot Dogs

Posted

Southmont came out on top in one of the most physical county and conference battles in quite sometime last week as they hung on to defeat North Montgomery 14-12. With the win Southmont stayed perfect at 3-0 on the season and now the Mounties will look to remain perfect as they make the long bus ride to Frankfort for a SAC matchup with the Hot Dogs.

Last week the Mounties had plenty of things to improve off of including being penalized 12 times against the Chargers. Long time, and new winning-est coach in Southmont history, Desson Hannum knows that his team will have to clean up some of those mistakes as they get ready for Frankfort.

“We still have too many penalties and mental mistakes and at this point in the season we need to be cutting down on those things tremendously by this point,” Hannum said. “Those things are the quickest way to prevent us from being as successful as we need to be.”

Frankfort comes in with a record of 1-2 on the season and has dropped their last two games (54-30 vs Clinton Prairie and 55-6 vs Tri-West). Typically a run-first team, the Hot Dogs have transitioned into more a spread style of offense often using five wide-receivers. In their first three games Junior quarterback Doug Wood has already thrown 110 passes completing 55 of them for 647 yards.

On the ground Wood can make plays with his legs as he’s also rushed for 142 yards on 22 carries. Jakob Burns is the primary back with 30 carries for 208 yards.

Senior receiver Quincy Perry is the teams go-to target on the outside as he’s caught 27 passes for 349 yards.
“Mostly everything that we’ve seen from them on film has been a five wide-receiver set,” Hannum said of the Hot Dogs. “They love to get the ball out quick so it’s definitely a different approach then what we’ve typically seen. We’re going to have to match up well in coverage against them and not get beat over the top.”

Defensively the Mounties have been able to get pressure on the quarterback tallying 17 sacks in their first three games of the season. The pressure that Southmont’s defense has been able to put on opposing quarterback’s is a big reason why the Mounties find themselves at 3-0.

Going 4-0 is something that South was able to do a season ago and Hannum and his team know the importance of getting off to another great start.

“We want to continue to do everything we can to be successful,” he said. “We talk about what it takes to be successful all the time. Being 4-0 after our first four games is kind of what we expect of our guys. We know that we have to put in the work before hand however if we want to get that done.”

The Mounties and Hot Dogs will kick it off in Frankfort at 7 pm. @JR_Sports on Twitter will have live scoring updates of the game.
