NEW MARKET — After their thrilling season opening win on Monday in the game’s final seconds, Southmont girls soccer, who opened the season ranked No. 20 in the 1A coaches poll, was back in action on Thursday as they hosted Western Boone for their Sagamore Conference opener. The Mounties had an all-around great performance and would walk away with a 3-0 shutout for their first SAC win.
Nearly right away the Mounties got on the board as senior Elle Gray found the back of the net in the games opening minutes to put South up 1-0. The Mounties would have plenty of chances as they controlled the ball for a majority of the first half, but it wasn’t until with nine minutes to go where they got on the board again. Senior Alivia Williams delivered a strike from about 15-20 yards out and the ball slipped through the hands of the WeBo goalie and in for the score. As the second half was winding down, Jessica Hale made it 3-0 Mounties and that was all Southmont would need to notch their second win of the season.
“I’m very happy with the way our girls played tonight,” first-year coach Roger Azar said. “The girls stepped up to the game and did a great job of distributing the ball in the first half. Our senior leadership really showed out there and I’m pleased with the way the game is going so far for our girls.”
The ball distribution as Azar mentioned allowed for the three goals for the Mounties to come from three different girls. Southmont has plenty of scorers they can lean on and that is something Azar is very pleased with. He also made sure to give credit to the back line of the Mountie defense which pitched a shutout.
“That gives me a great deal of confidence in our front line, when you have three different girls score,” he said. “I have to give credit to our defense too for shutting WeBo out. We didn’t allow too many shots on goal which was great to see. I think our defense is just as good as our offense right now.”
Southmont will look to continue their good start to the season on Saturday when they host Monrovia in a girl/boy double-header beginning at 10 a.m.
