Mounties run past Mustangs in season opener

NEW MARKET — The running game has been a staple of the Southmont offense in Desson Hannum’s tenure with the Mountie football team. In their season opener on Friday night Southmont used that dominating run game to defeat Fountain Central by a final score of 28-13.

Six different players touched the ball in the running game highlighted by Sophomore Wyatt Woodall’s 127 yards on 17 carries. On the night Southmont ran for 272 yards.  What allowed the Mounties to be successful up front was their play of their offensive line which Hannum was proud to see.

“They really allowed us to put the ballgame away in that fourth quarter,” he said. “All five of them did a tremendous job and I’m extremely proud of what they were able to give us on that side of the ball. They instilled their will on them and were a big part of our win.”

Southmont (1-0) got the scoring started on a 15 play 76 yard drive which was capped off by a Nick Scott quarterback sneak. Scott also threw a touchdown pass to Kion Kornelius. The other two scores for the Mounties came on a five-yard run by Carson Chadd and the nail in the coffin came late in the fourth when Kellan Kaelin punched it in from eight yards out.

“Overall it was a hard fought win and it was one of those grind it out games and I’m just happy we came away with the win.”

Fountain Central (0-1) trailed 14-7 at the half, but was able to get a touchdown from Senior running back Austin Pickett. However the Mustangs missed the extra point that would’ve tied up the game. Coach Ryan Hall despite the loss took many positives away from the game.

“Our kids battled all night long,” Hall said. “It’s better football than what we’ve played in the last few years. We got tired near the end of the game and eventually their running game wore us out late. You could tell we were gassed near the end.”

Southmont will travel to North Putnam next week, while the Mustangs will host Riverton Parke.
