Mounties thump Red Ramblers

NEW MARKET — Southmont’s girls’ basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat Attica 63-26 and pick up their 10th win of the season.

With a narrow 17-15 lead, the Mounties (10-7) outscored the Red Ramlbers (3-14) 8-0 over the last 2:35 of the first half to take a 25-15 lead at the break, and never looked back.

“We just didn’t have enough energy, and we weren’t moving our feet defensively,” Southmont coach Dustin Oakley said. “We just allowed them to be the aggressor. I thought they were more aggresive and tougher than us in that first half.”

Southmont didn’t miss a beat in the second half.

Sidney Veatch sparked an early run in the third quarter as the Mounties outscored the Red Ramblers 20-8 in the period to take a 45-23 lead into the final period.

Veatch recorded another double-double and led the Mounties with 16 points.

Natalie Manion added 14 points, including 10 in the second half, while Addi Charles and Belle Miller each reached double-figures with 10 points apiece.

Southmont cleaned things up offensively in the last 16 minutes, only committing six turnovers, after 18 in the first half. The Mounties connected on 15-of-32 shots in the second half.

Southmont returns to the floor tonight at Seeger to face a 15-2 Patriots team.

“They’re going to hold on to the ball for minutes,” Oakley said. “They’re really going to want to slow it down. So our first four minutes are really crucial. We are going to have to take care of it and be confident, and knock down some early shots.”
