NEW MARKET — Coming off an exciting win Friday over a talented Seeger team, the Southmont Mounties win big at home, 80-40, over the Riverton Parke Panthers.
The Mounties (7-2) jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. In fact, the Panthers (7-6) didn’t score their first points until 3:30 in the first quarter. The Mounties outscored the Panthers 53-16 in the first half.
“I thought we came in locked in,” said Southmont Coach Michael Byrum. “We were focused in on the game plan. We wanted to make a statement tonight after not being pleased with our performance last night.”
The Mounties’ offense and defense was firing on all cylinders. Riverton Parke ended the game with 21 turnovers as the Mountie defense had several different looks throughout the game. Southmont had four reach double figures in scoring.
“I think it shows if we work hard on the defensive end that it can carry over to the offensive end,” Byrum said. “When we have struggled this year, we haven’t been as focused on the defensive end. I think our disappointed in last night lit a light bulb for our guys.”
Leading all scorers was Aaron McMasters with 18. Other scorers for the Mounties were Vince Reimondo with 15, Heath Tolliver and Dean McCaughey with 10 each.
Riverton Parke was led in scoring by Eli Roberts and Collett Sanders with nine points each.
Southmont hosts Covington on Friday and travels to Crawfordsville for a rematch on Saturday.
