Girls Basketball Preview

Mustangs look forward to season

VEEDERSBURG — Fountain Central’s girls basketball team is emphasizing the fundamentals as they prepare for the upcoming season.

“Fundamentals and keeping it simple,” coach Tom Anderson said. “We work on fundamentals the first part of practice every day. We have to take care of the ball.”

Giveaways were a problem last season, but Anderson has quite a bit of experience back from the team and went through the battles of a three-win campaign.

The Mustangs return just under 22 points per game and just under 15 rebounds. Only one player on the roster did not see at least some varsity action last year.

“We have two seniors, Reagan Oswalt and Dana Sanders, who have been vocal in practices and have taken on a leadership role,” Anderson said. “Junior Dakota Borman comes off a sophomore season as our second-leading scorer, and junior Gracie Foxworthy has experience as a starter last season. Sophomore Jerzi Hershberger showed a lot of promise as a freshman last year and will be running point most of the time.”

Borman averaged 8.6 points and 3.0 rebounds, while Foxworthy had a 5.2 scoring and 3.9 rebounding average.

“I think we are faster than last year,” Anderson noted. “We have good speed up front and with a couple kids who are coming up from junior varsity which is going to help with some changes we have made offensively and defensively. With junior Marley Massey coming up from junior varsity, I think we can be a little more up-tempo and we will have the opportunity to press more than we have in the past. Depending on our matchups, we will have a mix. We are only going to have a couple coming off the bench this season, and we are looking for Gwen Sandlin and Audri Eades to step up to help with our outside game.”

The Mustangs have three of their first four games at home and open tonight (Thursday) against Clinton Prairie and take on Frankfort Saturday. There are November games against Crawfordsville and North Montgomery plus Wabash River Conference games ahead.
