VEEDERSBURG — Fountain Central was riding a five-game win streak heading into Thursday night’s matchup with North Putnam. The Mustangs were able to find the Cougars quickly after COVID issues with Tri-County who the Mustangs were originally scheduled to play. The Cougars came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and had the Mustangs on the ropes early as they held a 24-11 lead after the first quarter. The Mustangs then found their stride and took over the rest of the game as they would pull away for a convincing 57-38 win over the Cougars.
“We just stayed the course tonight,” Fountain Central coach Jason Good said. “I think once they settled down into the pace of how they (North Putnam) play, they pulled together and just kept fighting. Our girls always compete no matter what the score may say. We’re getting better each and every game and it’s just fun to watch.”
The win for the Mustangs (11-5) now pushes their winning streak to six games. Dakota Borman led all scorers in the game with 17 points. Both Larissa Bowers and Gracie Foxworthy recorded a double-double as both scored 13 points. Foxworthy ended the night with 16 rebounds and Bowers recorded 11 boards. Good took some time to talk about the win streak and when he noticed things starting to change with his team.
“When we played Seeger in our Bi-County tournament,” Good noted. “Earlier in the season they beat us by 40-something points. The second time we played them we jumped out to an early lead, but they ultimately won the game, however that night I realized that our girls were learning how to compete and after that, that’s when we got on our winning streak.”
Reghan Christy led the Cougars with 13 points in the loss for the Cougars (6-10). Marin Davies added 11.
Thursday night also marked senior night for the Lady Mustangs. The team honored their three seniors Marley Massey, Borman and Foxworthy before the game. Good also took some time to talk about how all three of them have helped mold the program to where it is today.
“What’s neat about all three of these girls is that they’ve stuck it out through their careers. Until this season they had never won more than five games in a season. I think that says a lot about what kind of people they are. We always talk about being a good teammate, and those three have grown as teammates and that’s one of their best qualities that they have. I’m really glad that I got the chance to coach them this year.”
