Coach Greg Dean said Fountain Central has been playing their best basketball of the season. The Mustangs hope their progress continues when they face Lafayette Central Catholic at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Fountain Central 1A Sectional.
Central Catholic enters the tourney with a 9-13 record, however local basketball fans know the Knights are always competitive and play a tougher schedule than a lot of 1A schools.
The Mustangs (5-17) are not being intimidated by LCC.
“I think our team is motivated by the draw,” Dean said. “We have been playing better as of late and we are looking forward to carrying that momentum into the sectional.”
Dean said his team needs to limit turnovers and rebound if they are to find success.
“We will have to take care of the basketball and rebound,” Dean said. “We aren’t the biggest team in the sectional, so we will have to work to compete on the glass.”
Fountain Central’s leading scorer is sophomore Eli Foxworthy who averages 15.5 points per game and he leads the team with 2.3 steals per contest.
Mustang senior Noah Dotson is the leading rebounder with an average of five per game.
Despite their record, Dean has been pleased with the effort his team has displayed this season. His players have been coachable and have worked to get better.
“I’ve been the most pleased with our team’s ‘buy in’ to what we are doing,” Dean said. “We’ve made adjustments throughout the year and the kids have really taken those changes to heart and done their best to improve throughout the course of the season.”
Lafayette Central Catholic is led by junior guard Mikey Stapleton who averages 11.3 points per game. Senior forward Ray Clayton adds 10.8 points per game and he averages 4.7 rebounds per outing.
