A new officer has joined the force at the Crawfordsville Police Department.

Officer Dakota Carlton was sworn in to duty by Crawfordsville Clerk-Treasurer Terri Gadd following Wednesday’s meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety.

Carlton, 22, joins the department from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a jail sergeant.

The Avon native became interested in law enforcement as a child and took a law enforcement class at the Area 31 Career Center at Ben Davis High School.

“I always wanted to go out and help people,” said Carlton, who will begin several months of training before going out on the road.

Carlton will attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy later this year.

“My opinion is that the experience gained from working corrections translates very well to working as a police officer,” Chief Aaron Mattingly said.

The department is fully staffed with 41 sworn officers.
