North adding new positions with stimulus money

LINDEN — North Montgomery School Corp. is adding new positions for next year using federal stimulus dollars.

The school board gave its approval Monday for the changes, which include hiring a student learning coordinator at North Montgomery Middle School. The role will be similar to that of the instructional coaches at the elementaries.

Also at the middle school, another special education teacher will be hired to handle a growing caseload of students with special needs.

A second counselor is coming on board at the high school to allow student services director Brooke VanScoyoc to expand her duties in the rest of the district.

The three elementary schools will each receive a fitness coach to resume physical education-type classes and an additional fourth grade class is being added at Sommer.

“They are elbow to elbow in third grade this year and as those bodies get bigger, they’re not going to be able to distance,” said superintendent Dr. Colleen Moran, “so we can easily do that and get the numbers down the next two years.”

Moran said there was internal interest in several of the positions. The positions are being funded through the school’s allocation of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund money.

The board also:

• Gave approval to apply for a nearly $10,000 annual grant from the Montgomery County Community Foundation to fund health and wellness services.

• Approved changing technology director Craig Reich’s title to director of educational initiatives and enrollment. In addition to handling tech needs, Reich also oversees online student enrollment and transfers.
