LINDEN — North Montgomery School Corporation introduced its first policy dealing with Artificial Intelligence.
The AI policy was introduced on first reading and will be acted upon at the board’s January meeting.
The policy states the school corporation recognizes the positive impact AI technology may have on the school corporation’s educational program and operations. The use of AI must be consistent with the corporation’s mission, goals and operational integrity.
The policy cross references several policies already in place. The policies include: personal communication devices, student conduct, student and staff technology use and safety, student records, confidentiality and security breach of confidential databases.
Misuse of AI may result in disciplinary consequences, including suspensions or expulsion for students. For staff misuse of AI by staff could result in suspension or termination.
North Montgomery Superintendent Dr. Colleen Moran said she anticipates the policy to change several times in the future as school learn now to address AI use. She also said the purpose of the new policy is to “safeguard students and staff.”
The board approved the extension of the consulting agreement with Jim McBee. McBee is aiding the new Business Manager Glenda Nice. McBee retired at the end of the 2024 school year. The extension will keep McBee involved with the corporation until the end of the present school year.
The board also accepted the distribution of a total of $8,196 received from the Department of Education for kindergarten through grade 3 employees involved with teaching early literacy. The funds will be divided between 27 staff members.
