LINDEN — Cinderella meets Little Red Riding Hood and other Brothers Grimm fairy tale characters in Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” which takes the stage this weekend at North Montgomery High School.
The show is open to the public, marking a gradual return to normal for North’s performing arts departments, which had to record February’s middle school performance of “Descendants” on DVD due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“We’re just so grateful to have a moment to continue the arts,” said Mike Melvin, the show’s director.
The show opens at 7 p.m. tonight in the auditorium with additional performances at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The auditorium will be limited to 25% capacity. Tickets are only available online for presale at bit.ly@northhsfinearts.
Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students.
The Stephen Sondheim production follows the story of a baker and his wife, who wish to become parents; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk.
When a witch puts a curse on the baker and his wife preventing them from having a child, they begin a journey to break the curse.
The couple must find certain objects in the woods to remove the spell, leading them to cross paths with the other fairy tale figures, said senior Abi Eustler, who plays the baker’s wife.
The show features 70 songs, a vocally demanding performance that includes complex rhythms, said music director Sarah Kavanagh.
“It’s been a joy to watch them grow by learning the score,” Kavanagh said.
Students are also involved in the technical aspect of the show, developing a light plan and working the sound.
The show is conducted by Andy Simpkins and choreographed by Megan Birk.
