North'a Waldon chooses Wabash

An injury to a teammate gave Zach Waldon a golden opportunity.

Now the recent North Montgomery graduate is headed to Wabash to play football as a running back.

“I got my chance to play filling in for our injured running back at the time, Zak Searle,” he said of his senior football season. “I had never played running back or linebacker at the high school level until my senior year, but when coach asked me how I felt about playing those positions I was ready to get to work to help out the team wherever I was needed, through learning all the skilled positions I was better able to understand how our team worked together.”

Waldon cashed in on the opportunity by leading the Chargers with 647 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He also added 24 tackles on defense, helping North Montgomery to its first winning season since 2015.

Since he can remember Waldon has wanted to play college football.

“Simply because the love I have for the game and playing in college was something I strived for from a young age just improving myself in every way possible on and off the field,” he said.

Now he will have the opportunity at the school of his choice.

“There is no other college that made me feel like I was at home,” Waldon said of Wabash. “Not because it’s 15 minutes away from my house, but they care about  you and treat you as a brother instead of a number on a chart paying to get and education, everyone you meet on the Wabash College campus is super nice and very welcoming.”

Waldon says he knows he has to keep putting in the work in order to have a chance to show his talents for the Little Giants.

“I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing,” he said. “There is always work to be done and always something you can improve on each day, you just have to give it 110%, you have to take advantage of every opportunity thrown your way whether it’s in a game or practice.”

He also said that making a goal his freshman year of high school of eventually becoming a team captain helped keep him motivated throughout his time at North Montgomery.

Team members nominated him as a captain for his senior season, and while Waldon enjoyed the moment, he knows it’s time to set a new goal and work toward it.

A goal of making an impact for Wabash football.

The Little Giants have welcomed another strong leader.
