The Dorothy Q Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently announced the recipients of this year’s Good Citizen Award.
One student from each of the three county high schools is selected for the annual award. This year’s Dorothy Q Chapter award winners are: from Crawfordsville High School, Celeste Moore; from North Montgomery High School, Ava Nunan; and from Southmont High School, Evelyn Zachary.
Each senior winner receives a monetary gift from the chapter, a DAR Good Citizen lapel pin, a certificate and wallet recognition card. The overall local essay contest winner is Nunan. Her entry will continue on to the state level.
Dorothy Q Chapter First Vice Regent Michele Borden and Good Citizen Award Program Chair Melody Davis expressed their gratitude to everyone involved in assisting with the program.
“It is a privilege to have such an incredible group of high school seniors for this year’s Good Citizen Awards,” the two women stated in a press release. “Being chosen for the Dorothy Q Chapter, NSDAR Good Citizen Award is a wonderful reflection of each student. It indicates the efforts they made in writing an essay and demonstrating outstanding qualities of what they believe in and what they hold dear.
The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution’s mission is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism.
Each year since 1936, Indiana DAR-Dorothy Q Chapter invites county schools to name their Good Citizens to participate. Each student composed an original 500-word essay entitled “Our American heritage and our responsibility for preserving it,” with a focus question, “What are the civic responsibilities of a good citizen and why are these duties, activities and behaviors important to the shaping of the America you hope to experience?”
The intent of the award and scholarship contest is to encourage and reward high school seniors who possess the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes these students who demonstrate outstanding qualities in their homes, schools and communities by dependability (truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality); service (cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others); leadership (personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation).
