NWS: Cold air funnels possible today

Cold air funnels are possible this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather phenomenon is associated with thunderstorms or showers that form in deep low-pressure systems, meteorologists say. There is little chance of severe thunderstorms today, NWS reports.

They typically extend a few hundred feet downward from the sky and rotate or spin like a top, lasting only a few minutes before dissipating, NWS said in a special weather statement.

It’s rare for cold air funnels to reach the ground, causing only minor damage in those cases, according to meteorologists.

More reports of small funnel clouds are possible across central Indiana today. Warnings will be issued if any touch the ground.
