October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted

The city of Crawfordsville has proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton urges all residents to become involved in efforts to prevent and respond to domestic violence, and recognize the lasting impact domestic violence has on the community.

“Crawfordsville is not exempt from the domestic violence cases that touch communities across the country,” Barton said. “Approximately four people per day are abused by an intimate partner in Crawfordsville. That is four too many per day, and we will continue to provide services and advocate for those individuals’ rights to lead a safe and abuse-free life.”

According to the Family Crisis Shelter, domestic violence victims spend nearly $82,000 over their lifetime on medical expenses, lost productivity, legal costs, and property loss and damage. Creating communities where people are connected, supported and cared for by one another can reduce these incidences of domestic violence.

“I hope residents will consider becoming involved in efforts to stop domestic violence in our community and recognize the significant impact it has on individuals,” Barton said.

The Family Crisis Shelter in Crawfordsville is available for those seeking out help in the community and can be contacted at 765-362-2030 or you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. The Family Crisis Shelter website is www.family
