Officials: Mill Street fire deliberately set

Posted

Investigators with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office have determined the fire that engulfed a historic church on Mill Street on Thursday was intentionally set.

Firefighters with the Crawfordsville Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire at 802 Mill St. before 2 p.m. Thursday. First responders fought the fire into the evening and called for assistance from Waynetown and Madison Township fire departments.

“Investigators have determined this fire to be incendiary, meaning this fire was set intentionally by someone who put a can of paint on a stove burner in the basement of the building. Utilities were still live to the building. The burner to the stove was found to be in the “on” position by responding firefighters,” said David Hosick, Director of Public Affairs at Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Investigators are now seeking assistance from the public. Residents who may have seen individuals in the area before the fire are encouraged to contact the state tipline 1-800-382-4628.
