Patriots come back to down Athenians in five set thriller

Posted

Terre Haute North and Crawfordsville met up a season ago and the Athenians downed the Patriots in a five set thrilling match. With revenge on their minds from last year the Patriots made the trip to Crawfordsville on Wedneseday. Early on it was all Athenians as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead and looked as if they would come away with a sweep. However the game proved to be far from over and the momentum quickly shifted against CHS and Terre Haute dominated sets three and four winning 25-16 and 25-15 to set up a race to 15.

The fifth and final set featured runs by both teams as the Patriots jumped out to a 4-1 lead before CHS responded to go up 8-5. The visitors then scored the next five to go up 10-8 and after that the Athenians could never re-gain the lead as Terre Haute stormed all the way back from 0-2 as CHS would fall in five sets 25-21, 25-18, 16-25, 15-25, 11-15.

“It was a hard fought match all night between two really good teams,” Crawfordsville coach Kelly Johnson said. “I don’t think there were any losers in this gym tonight.”

In the loss Macy Bruton led the way for CHS with 25 kills, 17 digs and four aces. Halle Elliot added 23 digs with Jessica Tribble tallying 35 assists, three aces, and five digs. Hallie Gayler recorded eight kills and four blocks and Devan Johnson had 10 kills for the Athenians.

The loss for the Athenians sees them drop their second straight match after starting the season 8-0. They’ll look to snap their two-game skid when they hit the road this evening to take on Attica.
