Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich may seem simple since we have all completed the task many times. How would you tell an “alien” how to make a sandwich? That was the question posed to science students in Lainey McCrory’s seventh grade classes at Parke Heritage Middle School. Using the directions given to them, the “alien” volunteers attempted to make a sandwich. The sandwiches varied greatly as the aliens followed each step as written. Students in the class quickly realized that when giving instructions detailed steps are required to complete the task. Serving as the alien volunteers were McCrory, Lisa Wrightsman, Brianne Shields and Tyler Milner. This assignment was to reinforce to the students how important it is to read and follow directions, which is essential for science labs. This exercise was also valuable practice as the students are currently creating their own science experiment and writing out their own experiment procedures.
