Phillip Eugene Sorrels, 85, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022.

He was born June 12, 1937, at Crawfordsville, to Dwight and Bertha (Douglas) Sorrels.

After graduating from Alamo High School, he enlisted and served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1958. Returning to the Crawfordsville area, he married and raised his family, attended Freedom Baptist Church, worked as a hoist operator and retired from RR Donnelley & Sons with 37 years of service. He resided the last few years at the Indiana Veteran’s Home in West Lafayette.

Phil was a stranger to no one and made friends wherever he went, often meeting up at the Snacker diner for breakfast and stories. He remained close with childhood schoolmates throughout his life and delighted in telling the same bad jokes to all, as though each rendition was for the first time.

He is survived by four children, Greg (Christie) Sorrels of Lawrence, Debi Rose of New Ross, Scott (Carletta) Sorrels of North Carolina and Rachel (Alan) Metsker of Crawfordsville; sister Nancy Graham of Washington; nephews, Doug (Pam) of Tennessee and Stuart (Mitzi) of Washington; niece Laura Archer (Bob) of Washington; grandchildren, Josh (Emmy) Sorrels, Mike Sorrels, Sydney Wilmoth, J.D. Joseph, Ian Rose, Tammy Robbins, Jill (Leo) Lara, Megan (Jason) Yoder, Elizabeth (Joe) Zuk and Sarah Metsker; great-grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, Kaiya, Aubrie, Atlanta, Kaidence, Kamarin, Tristan, Mackenzie, Illiana, Leonardo, Joseph, Remington and Reagan; and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Brayden Metsker; and great-granddaughter Joselyn Sorrels

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Hunt & Son Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Military rites and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery North will follow.
