Phyllis Esther (Kerns) Wininger of Crawfordsville passed away Monday afternoon, May 4, 2020, at Ben Hur Home. She was 85.

Phyllis was born Feb. 16, 1935, to Alton and Lillian (Bauer) Kerns in Martin County, Indiana. On Dec. 22, 1956, she married her husband of 63 years Gary H. Wininger in Dubois County, Indiana. He passed away Feb. 14, 2020.

She graduated from Shoals High School in 1952. Following her graduation, she was employed by the State of Indiana, working with the Indiana Utilities Commission at the Statehouse, and later as a secretary for an Indiana counties history book author. After raising her three sons, she was employed by Burkhart Funeral Home for many years providing office, insurance and notary services. She also supported Charles Burkhart during his tenure as Montgomery County Coroner as a deputy coroner, providing administrative services.

She loved family gatherings being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening, playing cards with friends, doing puzzles and playing scrabble. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the NuValdaec Home Extension Club. She was active with her husband Gary at the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association events.

She is survived by her sons, Brian (Martha) Wininger of Crawfordsville, Brent (Linda) Wininger of Crawfordsville and Brad (Dondra) Wininger of Waveland; grandchildren, Morgan (Dr. Michael) Shanks of Terre Haute, Brittany (Keith) Hatten of Zionsville, Courtney Wininger of Knoxville, Tennessee, Brooke (Kory) Chapman of Greenfield, Paige Wininger of Lafayette and Peyton Wininger of Waveland; great-grandchildren, Jane, Miles and Polly Shanks, Henley Hatten and Brody and Brendan Chapman; and sisters, Maryrose Risner of Crawfordsville and Betty Crays of French Lick, Indiana

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, George Walter Kerns, Clarence Edward Kerns and Ralph Alton Kerns.

Because of the active COVID-19 virus and concern for the safety of friends and family, a private family service with no visitation will be held Monday, May 11 at Christ Lutheran Church, 300 W. South Blvd., Crawfordsville, with Pastor Kelly Nelson officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 at the Albright Cemetery near Shoals, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Crawfordsville. The family would also ask for special prayers for the residents and staff of Ben Hur Home.
