Pierce was born in Crawfordsville to Virgil and Pauline (Perry) Green, and was preceded in death by his six siblings, Virginia, Barbara Jones, Alice Gray, Tom, Wally (Bud) and Elinor Rogers, as well as his wonderful wife (and high school sweetheart), Billie Winningham Green. His four children survive, Sara, Bill (Kim), Bob (Taffy) and Joanna, as well as his seven grandchildren, Virginia, Andrew, Sam, Sarah, Katie, Joe and Ben.

Pierce had many good friends throughout the U.S. from his relationships from high school, Wabash College, RR Donnelley’s and being active in the Crawfordsville community. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, and over the years served in various positions within that church.

Pierce graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1945, where he played football, basketball, and was a state finalist in the high hurdles. Pierce was president of National Honor Society and the Athenian Booster Club, and editor of the school newspaper his senior year. Pierce was also an Eagle Scout.

After a brief stint in the Navy at the end of World War II, Pierce went to Wabash College, where he played basketball and was a four-year starter on the football team, and was active in the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity (where he later served as chapter advisor). On May 28, 1950, the week before graduating from Wabash, Pierce married Billie Winningham, which was undoubtably the greatest success of his life. Pierce was admitted to IU Law School, but RR Donnelley made him a job offer he couldn’t refuse, and he worked there 40 years, eventually becoming night superintendent. He retired in 1989. Pierce served on the Crawfordsville City Council and the Crawfordsville School Board. Through the years he contributed considerable time fundraising for Wabash and his Phi Delt Fraternity.

Pierce was an avid golfer, and at his peak had a handicap of 2. He also enjoyed playing cards, both poker and competitive bridge. Pierce was elected to the Montgomery County Basketball Hall of Fame. Pierce particularly liked to travel, and to follow the Little Giants’ football and basketball teams. Pierce paid close attention to many political issues.

If you knew Pierce Green as his family did, it is likely there aren’t many people you’ve known that are more honest, humble and non-judgmental as he was. Pierce rarely made a negative comment about anyone but Washington politicians. He will always be a shining example to his family, and they will miss him.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at Burkhart Funeral Home, 201 W. Wabash Ave., with visitation starting at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery North.
