Police pursue pair on city’s south side

Crawfordsville police made two arrests Thursday following a chase through the city’s south side.

Kelly J. Rhoda, 49, and Jessica Lyn Rhoda, 32, both of Crawfordsville, were arrested after fleeing police on South Washington Street and crashing into construction signs on South Boulevard. Ultimately the pursuit ended a couple miles outside of town on State Road 32.

The incident began shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday when CPD officers Michael Ives and Kevin Cornell observed Kelly Rhoda driving in the 800 block of South Washington Street.

“(Kelly) Rhoda was known to have arrest warrants,” CPD Chief Mike Norman said.

“The vehicle attempted to elude the officers at a high rate of speed in the area of Mill Street and South Boulevard, continuing west out of town on State Road 32,” he said. “Rhoda’s vehicle struck a construction sign and continued west. The vehicle sustained damage and could not proceed as CPD officers and Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies followed at a low rate of speed.”

The pair’s vehicle then left the roadway and entered a bean field by the Marathon gas station. Kelly Rhoda attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended over a short distance.

Complicating matters were two pitbulls in the car, Norman said. The Animal Welfare League was called in to house the dogs for the time being.

In addition to warrants for theft and burglary, Kelly Rhoda now faces two charges of resisting law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.

He is currently housed at the Montgomery County Jail with an $8,000 cash-only bond.

Jessica Rhoda was arrested on two warrants for failure to appear. She was booked into the jail without bond.

No one was injured in the incident.
