Polls are open for Election Day

Voters head to the polls today in a primary election delayed nearly a month due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the south entrances of North Montgomery High School and Hoover Elementary School and in the Southmont High School fieldhouse.

“If it goes like early voting, it’s going to be smooth and easy,” Montgomery County Clerk Karyn Douglas said, adding with a laugh, “I’m not going to predict anything on this election.”

Voters should have their IDs ready when they arrive at the voting site to expedite the check-in process and follow social distancing guidelines, Douglas said. Cotton swabs will be available for using the voting machines along with hand sanitizer, and voters are encouraged to wear their own personal protective equipment.

Any voter who requested but did not receive an absentee ballot can vote in person by signing an affidavit at the polling site.

Republicans will pick candidates in four contested races for District 1 commissioner, county council at-large, Superior Court II judge and coroner.

In the commissioner race, incumbent John Frey faces challengers April Johnson and James Wills.

Four candidates are vying for seats on the council: incumbent Gary Booth,
Jake Bohlander, John Hedrick II and David Hunt. Three will move on to the fall election.

Daniel Petrie and Aaron Spolarich are running for judge, and incumbent coroner Darren Forman is being challenged by Christopher Imel.

District 3 commissioner Dan Guard, Superior Court Judge Heather Barajas, recorder Jennifer Bentley, surveyor Tom Cummins and clerk Karyn Douglas are all unopposed.

No Democrats are running for local offices. Eight Democratic presidential candidates who suspended their campaigns after Indiana’s filing deadline remain on the ballot alongside former Vice President Joe Biden, including Mike Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Yang.

The Republican presidential ticket includes President Donald Trump and Bill Weld.

Democrat Woody Myers and incumbent Republican Eric Holcomb are unopposed for their party’s nomination for governor.

Incumbent Republican Tim Brown and Democrat Greg Woods seek the nomination for state representative.

Four Democrats are seeking the nomination for Congress, including Montgomery County resident Howard Pollchik, Benjamin Frederick, Joe Mackey and Veronikka Ziol. The winner will face incumbent Republican Jim Baird in the fall.

Republicans will also select convention delegates and the precinct committeeperson.
