Post 72 broke a fifth inning tie and then hung on to defeat Danville, Illinois 4-3 on Monday at North Montgomery High School.
Danville got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Post 72 tied the score with a run in the fourth inning when Aiden Riser scored on a one-out error by Danville.
Post 72 put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The local squad used three hits and one walk to score the three runs. The singles were by Aiden Ambriz-Cruz, Landon Duncan and Riser. Riser drove in two runs in the inning.
The final run came when Danville made their second error of the game.
Danville cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth when Jayden Riggs hit a two-run homerun.
Collecting two hits apiece for Post 72 were Ambriz-Cruz, Riser and Duncan.
Drake Hoffa was the winning pitcher by going 6.1 innings and surrendering four hits.
Riser entered the game and pitched the last two outs for the save.
The two teams will open up the Danville, Illinois Invitational at 10 a.m. Friday.
Post 72 (10-4-1) will then play Alton, Illinois at 10 a.m. Saturday and Rock Island at noon Saturday.
All the games are played at Tilton, Illinois.
