Mounties defeat Covington

Southmont new baseball coach Dan Chadd saw his team get off to a good start Tuesday. The Mounties traveled to Covington and won 11-3.

A  big seven-run fourth inning propelled Southmont. It was the answer Southmont needed after giving up three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning, giving the Trojans a 3-1 lead.

Southmont junior Gunnar Shirk earned the win by pitching five innings while striking out eight Trojans. Mountie junior Phisher Benge threw two scoreless innings in relief and struck out three.

The Mounties had eight hits in the game led by Benge and Dean McGaughey who each collected two. McGaughey had a 3-RBI double in the top of the fifth inning.

Southmont (1-0) will host North Putnam today.

 

Athenians lose to Cascade

Crawfordsville lost to Cascade 8-6 on Monday at the Athenian Complex.

The Athenians could not hold on to a 6-5 fourth inning lead which they had earned with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cascade came back with two runs of their own in the fifth inning  to win the game.

Athenian senior Jude Coursey continued his hot hitting with three hits with two RBI to lead his team’s offense.

Five Athenian pitchers were able to strike out 11 Cadets over the course of the game.

Crawfordsville (0-2-1) travels today to Northview (0-2) for a 6 p.m. game.

 

Chargers down North Putnam

North Montgomery scored six runs in their final two at-bats Tuesday to overcome North Putnam 7-3.

The Charger offense was led by sophomore Aiden Ambriz-Cruz who collected three hits including a 2-RBI double in the sixth frame when North scored four runs.

Senior Cade Cole pitched six innings for the win.

Ambriz-Cruz pitched the final inning and recorded one strikeout.

Junior Keaton Brown collected two hits as did Crew Cole.

The Chargers (1-0) travel today to Fountain Central for a 5:30 p.m. game.

 

FC topped by Panthers

Riverton Parke completed a Wabash River Conference sweep of Fountain Central on Tuesday. The Panthers defeated the home-standing Mustangs 12-5.

Riverton Parke jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings before the Mustangs added three runs in the third, but FC was outscored 5-2 the rest of the game.

Mustangs Archer Davis and Uriah Wildman each collected two hits while Bryson Ross had three RBI.

Fountain Central (0-2)  will host North Montgomery at 5:30 p.m. today.

 

SOFTBALL

Mustangs lose at Riverton Parke

Fountain Central lost Tuesday at Riverton Parke 19-2 in five innings.

The Panthers collected 16 hits while the Mustangs only mustered five hits.

Oliviah Jones led the Mustangs with two hits and the sophomore scored one run. Cassandra Wildman scored the other Mustang run.

Fountain Central (1-2)  will host Lafayette Central Catholic today.

 

GOLF

Athenians win first meet

Crawfordsville’s golf team started the season on Tuesday with a 188-228 win over South Putnam at the Crawfordsville Municipal Golf Course.

Athenian Tanner Gilland recorded a 45 which made him medalist of  the match. Other Crawfordsville scores were Owen Pierce 46, Jude Hurt 48 and Caiden Murray 49.

The Athenians will compete next in the Cardinal Ritter Invitational at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Indianapolis.
