Athenians and Mounties split
Host Southmont’s boys team narrowly defeated Crawfordsville 69-63 on Friday. The Athenian girls won 129-50.
The boys meet was close all evening. Southmont had nine blue ribbons compared to Crawfordsville’s seven at the meet’s end. The Mounties were able to win all three relays giving them a 15-0 advantage since there are no points awarded for second-place in relays.
Winning for the Mountie boys were PV Clay Allen (11-06), LJ Evan Watson (20-0) and 100 M (11.39), Gaven Gray, Samuel Crum, Trent Reeves, Vince Reimondo 4x800 (8:55.06), Reimondo 1600 M. (4:59.44) and 800 M. (2:11.40), 4x100 M/ Allen, Avery Stadler, Gavin Downey, Watson (45.64), Crum 400 M. (55.61), 4x400 Gray, Downey, Reeves, Crum (3:40.54).
Winning for the Athenian boys were HJ Johnovan Smith (5:06) and 200 M. (24.99), Discus Alec Saidian (115.09), Shot Jaden Leap (37.07), 100 M. Hurdles Sadian (15.53) and 300 Hurdles (43.14) and 3200 M Hutton Haas (11:01.9).
Winning for Crawfordsville girls were HJ Sydney Elizondo (4.08), LJ Lilly Hummel L(15.02), Discus Campbell White (99:07), 4x800 Caroline Melevage, Sophia Melevage, Olivia Jett, Katherine Novak (10:56.54), 100 Hurdles Guinevere Schmitzer-Torbert (17.53), 100 M S. Winning for the Mountie girls were PV Molly Williams (7.06) and shot put Layla Gomez (29.04).
SOFTBALL
Athenians defeat Fountain Central
Crawfordsville recorded their first win of the season Saturday with a 19-9 win in five innings over Fountain Central.
The Athenians pounded out 14 hits and held the Mustangs to seven hits.
Athenian senior Delaney Spencer was 3-for-3 at the plate and she had four RBI. Molly Pierce, Laikyn Dowell and Christina Susdorf each had two hits.
The Mustang offense was led by Jackie Weber’s two hits and two runs.
Crawfordsville jumped out to a 12-2 lead after three innings before the Mustangs answer with four runs in the fourth inning. The Athenians scored three runs in the fourth inning to maintain a comfortable 15-4 lead after the fifth frame.
Crawfordsville (1-3) will play tonight at home at 5:45 against Sagamore Conference rival Danville (0-3).
Fountain Central (2-3) played at home against South Vermillion (1-3) on Monday before traveling Tuesday to South Vermillion.
Mounties split games
Southmont was defeated Saturday by defending sectional champion South Putnam 16-4 in six innings and defeated Seeger 12-2 in six innings.
In the victory, the Mounties scored eight runs in the third frame to take a 9-2 lead. Seeger scored two runs in the first inning for their only runs.
Southmont sophomore Kenzi Clate pitched all six innings to record the win. Clate recorded four strikeouts with only one walk. Clate also collected three hits and scored three runs.
Mounties Ella Barry and Anna Stokes each had two runs.
In the first game, Southmont was outhit 21 to nine. Stokes, Clate and Mallory Mason each had two hits. Freshman Ella Barry took the loss on the mound for Southmont.
The Mounties (2-2) will be home today 5:30 p.m. against Sagamore Conference rival Tri-West (1-3).
BASEBALL
Athenians earn first win
Crawfordsville won its first game of the new season Saturday with a 9-0 win over Fountain Central.
Athenian Ethan Campbell earned the win by allowing no runs in six innings. The sophomore only allowed one hit and struck out six Mustangs. Henry Bannon pitched the final one and one-third innings and struck out two Mustangs.
Athenian sophomore Konnor Ellsbury was 4-for-4 at the plate and had two RBI while score one run.
Crawfordsville senior Jude Coursey had three hits as did Bannon. Campbell recorded two hits.
Mustang Austin Batchelor pitched the first three innings and only allowed one earned run. Broady Davis pitched the final three innings and surrendered eight runs but only three earned runs. Fountain Central committed four errors in the game.
Davis had two hits for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs (0-4) played at home against South Vermillion on Monday. Crawfordsville (1-3-1) entertains Sagamore Athletic Conference Danville (0-3) at 6 p.m. today.
Chargers beat Cascade
North Montgomery defeated Cascade 8-6 on Saturday.
Cascade (2-1) led 3-1 after two and one-half innings. The Charger offense found its groove in the bottom of the third by scoring three runs and took the lead for good.
Charger senior Cade Cole won his second game of the season. After giving up the two first inning runs, Cole settled down and held to pitch two scoreless innings.
The Cadets did retake the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs, however, the Chargers were able to get two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 8-5. Each team added on run before the game ended.
Cole threw six innings and gave up seven hits and four earned runs. The righty threw seven strikeouts.
Charger sophomore Aiden Ambriz-Cruz had two hits and scored four runs to lead the North Montgomery offense.
Ambriz-Cruz pitched the final inning to record a save.
North Montgomery (4-0) will host Sagamore Conference rival Western Boone at 5:30 p.m. today.
SOCCER
United U15 wins two
The Montgomery County United U15 soccer team secured back-to-back victories. On Saturday, they traveled to Cascade to face the Mill Creek Mavericks U15 team and won 11-0.
On Sunday, MC United returned home to host the Putnam Panthers. After a hard-fought battle on the field, MC United emerged victorious with a 2-1 win.
