Mounties win at McCutcheon

The Mounties did something Friday that has only been done twice in 17 tries. Southmont defeated McCutcheon and the game was in Lafayette no less. After a hectic last few seconds, the Mounties held on for a 52-51 victory.

With the Mounties trailing 51-49, Aaron McMasters hit a three-pointer giving his team the lead with 47 seconds on the clock.

The score remained the same and the Mavericks had the ball as the clock was running down. McCutcheon missed three consecutive shots by gathering two offensive rebounds. When the buzzer sounded, the Mounties were able to walk of the court as the victors.

“It was a crazy finish, but we just kept fighting,” Southmont guard Evan Watson said. “(McCutcheon) kept getting the ball back at the end but could not score. It was pretty exciting to win at their place.”

Southmont (12-6) will travel to South Putnam (6-12) today.

 

Chargers win SAC game

North Montgomery defeated Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Frankfort on Friday 55-53 behind Charger Kelby Harwood’s 27 points.

Harwood, who is leading the SAC in scoring and rebounding, put on a show in the second half.

Trailing at the half 26-21, the Hotdogs scored five points early in the third quarter to go up 31-21. After a quick timeout, the Chargers came out and started taking control led by Harwood.

North Montgomery won the third stanza 16-9. Harwood went on a scoring run. The senior scored 10 points in the quarter to propel his team to a 37-35 lead. North had a 13-0 run to take the lead. By the game’s end, Harwood scored 21 second half points.

Charger junior Colton Arnold scored nine points and Cam Enlow added seven.

North Montgomery (6-12) will host Clinton Central (1-18) today and Tri-West on Friday.

The Chargers’ Saturday game against Sheridan is canceled. The Blackhawk’s girls basketball team is playing in Saturday’s semi-state.

 

Athenians lose to Tri-West

Crawfordsville dropped a Sagamore Athletic Conference game Friday at home to Tri-West 73-51.

With the win, the Bruin secured the final SAC championship.

Tri-West led from wire-to-wire.

Athenian senior Alex Saidian was the leading scorer with 22 points and eight rebounds.

“Alec played a good game and it was good to see him play like he is capable,” Crawfordsville assistant coach Craig Carroll said.

Crawfordsville freshman Johnovan Smith added 14 points.

Tri-West was led in scoring by Ryan Miller’s 19. The Bruins hit 11 three-pointers in the game.

 

Crawfordsville drops Saturday game

Crawfordsville lost at Twin Lakes on Saturday by a score of 54-41.

The Athenians led 23-21 at the half but were down 41-31 at the end of three quarters.

Saturday’s away game against Lafayette Central Catholic has been rescheduled for today due to the Knight’s girls basketball team playing in Saturday’s semi-state.

 

Fountain Central loses to Parke Heritage

Fountain Central traveled to Wabash River Conference foe Parke Heritage on Friday and lost 78-27.

The Mustangs trailed from start to finish.

Parke Heritage, ranked No. 6 in 2A, was led in scoring by sophomore Carter Crum’s 17 points.

Fountain Central (5-14, 1-5 WRC) will host North Vermillion (15-6, 3-2 WRC) on Friday and Southmont (12-6) on Saturday.

 

GIRLS SWIMMING

Girls end season at state prelims

Girls swimming came to an end Friday during the preliminary round of the IHSAA state finals at the Natatorium in Indianapolis. No area swimmers advanced to Saturday’s finals. The season ended successful girls’ season at Crawfordsville and North Montgomery. Carmel High School secured its 39th consecutive team title.

 

BOYS WRESTLING

County wrestlers end season

No county wrestlers advanced out of the New Castle semi-state on Saturday.

Crawfordsville’s Landon Vaught won his first match but lost in the second round.

Southmont’s Lukas Scott won his first match but dropped the second match of the day.

Fountain Central’s Dakoda Willoughby was able to advance to Friday’s state finals by placing third.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL 

North’s 7th grade team wins tourney

North Montgomery’s seventh grade girls team placed third in their own tourney on Saturday.

The Chargers defeated Fountain Central 26-17 in the consolation game. Olivia Nuppnau scored 10 points and Kolbi Murphy added six in the opening game.

In the morning game, Tecumseh defeated the Chargers 36-11.

Nuppnau scored four points to lead the home team.

The Chargers (5-6) play at Greencastle on Wednesday.
