Crawfordsville places 11th at state
Crawfordsville defeated Owen Valley 52-17 in the Athenian’s last match of the day at the 2A Team State tournament at Jay County. Crawfordsville finished 1-2 and placed 11th.
The Athenians lost a close opening match to Mt. Vernon by a score of 38-32.
In the second match Crawfordsville lost 51-15 to Hanover Central.
Athenians Landon Vaught (144) and Keegan Cokel (285) both finished the day with 3-0 records.
In the 157-weight class Kollin Moore won twice, and Noe Torres won a match to give the Athenians three wins in the class.
Going 2-1 on the day for Crawfordsville were Aiden Hutchison (150), Braiden Hites (175), Carlos Guitierrez (113) and Armondo Munoz (126).
Garrett defeated Delta to win the 2A championship.
The Athenians will wrestle Central Catholic at home Wednesday and will participate in the Sagamore Athletic Conference meet Saturday at North Montgomery.
Charger’s Kunz advances to state
North Montgomery’s Hailey Kunz earned a trip to the state finals when she pinned Isabella Bailey of Hamilton Heights in the second period to place third. In the 110 class Fountain Central’s Lydia Perkins and Crawfordsville’s Emely Herrera each won their first match of the day but fell in the second round.
North’s Skylar Hall (115) lost in the second round. Crawfordsville Bri Morales (115) lost her opening match as did Fountain Central’s Savanna Richardson in 115.
The Mustangs Araya Brown (120) lost her first-round bout.
Charger Haylee Gemino (125) won her first match but lost in the second round. Teammate Sophia Shea (130) also went 1-1 to close out her season.
In the 135 class North’s Makenna Hutson lost her first match as did Mustang Ruby Deel (140).
In the 155 class North Montgomery’s Paige Yarger lost due to an injury default.
Charger Julia Shea (170) lost in her second bout and Crawforsdville’s Bianca Miche Montes (170) did not advance past the first round.
In the 235 class Fountain Central’s Amira Welles lost her opening bout.
Kunz will wrestle Friday at Corteva Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Cougars down Mustangs
North Putnam defeated Fountain Central 42-28 on Saturday. The Mustangs are now 3-6 on the season.
No statistics were available.
Fountain Central will travel Friday to South Vermillion.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Athenians drop game
Crawfordsville dropped a Saturday game to Speedway. The Sparkplugs won 62-38.
Speedway (5-9) led 39-18 at the halftime.
Crawfordsville (2-14) will play today at Western Boone.
