Golden Eagles beat Athenians
Guerin Catholic defeated Crawfordsville 10-1 in the championship game of the Brebeuf 3A Sectional on Monday. The Athenian pitching staff had a rough go allowing 10 runs in four innings and allowed four Crawfordsville hits.
Guerin Catholic came out of the gate in the bottom of the first inning and plated three runs against starter Henry Bannon.
Crawfordsville inserted Landon Gerold in the bottom of the second inning and the Golden Eagles scored three more runs to go up 5-0 after three innings.
Crawfordsville scored their lone run in the top of the third inning. Matt Miller drove in pinch runner Blayne Willhite with a single to right field to make the score 5-1.
Guerin responded with five more runs in the next two innings to go up with what would become the final 10-1 score.
Athenian freshman Braden Schlote pitched the final two innings and did not surrender a run and only one hit.
Crawfordsville had four hits in the game. Jude Coursey, Miller, Bannon and Sam Minnette all had singles.
Guerin’s starting pitcher, Luke Gremelshpacher, was credited with the win. The lefty pitched five innings recording seven strikeouts.
Crawfordsville closes the season with a 12-13-1 record. Guerin improves to 17-10 and will host Cathedral in the regional.
Mustangs lose
in last inning
Fountain Central led 1-0 going into the last at-bat for Riverton Parke. The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win their own 1A sectional championship breaking the hearts of Mustang players and fans.
The Mustang defense did its part by throwing out three Panther runners at the plate during the game.
No game statistics were made available.
Central Catholic defeats Delphi
Lafayette Central Catholic defeated Delphi 6-1 Monday night for their own 2A sectional championship.
Delphi scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
Central Catholic tied the game in the top of the third inning when former Indiana Thunder player Lucas Gerkey singled and drove in a run.
Central Catholic took the lead for good when Isaiah Hopkins hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.
Gerkey ended the game with four RBI. He had two of the four Central Catholic hits in the game. He also pitched a complete game allowing five hits and striking out eight Oracles.
Central Catholic (25-5) will host Oak Hill (19-9) in the 2A regional on Saturday.
Greencastle takes down Wolves
Greencastle defeated Parke Heritage 8-5 in the South Vermillion 2A Sectional.
The Tiger Cubs’ offense made sure the Wolves would not make a comeback in the championship game. Scoring in every inning but one, Greencastle outhit Parke Heritage 10-6.
Greencastle (18-5) will host University (19-11) on Saturday in the regional.
