BASKETBALL

Athenians drop game to Covington

Crawfordsville and Covington played a back-and-forth ballgame on Friday and it was the Trojans who went on the final run to win 57-51.

Crawfordsville (6-16) only trailed by one point at halftime by a 29-28 score. The Athenians had a 41-39 advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Athenians actually led 50-41 early in the fourth quarter before the Trojans responded with a 16-1 run.

Covington ended up winning the final period 18-10 to claim the victory. With a minute left the game was tied at 51 apiece.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Landon Herzog put the Trojans ahead 54-51 with 42 seconds remaining. The rest of the Covington points came from the free throw line to close out the game.

Crawfordsville Coach David Pierce said his team struggled at the end of the final period, but his team had good moments in the game.

“We played well at times but couldn’t get the job done at the end,” Pierce said. “We were at full strength for the first time for a few games and we had some guys play well. Alec Saidian had what might have been his best game of the season.”

The Athenians only had four players score in the game. Saidian and Mason McCarty each scored 15 points. Johnovan Smith added 12 points and Jacob Lee scored nine points.

Covington was led by Herzog’s 16 points and Kaden Smith’s 13.

Crawfordsville will next play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Frankfort Sectional against Brebeuf.

Chargers lose at Greencastle

North Montgomery traveled to Greencastle and lost 66-50.

The Tiger Cubs led after one quarter 17-9 by scoring off Charger turnovers to finish the period in the closing minutes.

Greencastle extended the lead to 38-21 at halftime by dominating the boards especially on the offensive end.

North Montgomery assistant coach Tom Lutz said the Chargers heard a “spirited” halftime talk from head coach Chad Arnold. The team responded in a good way. The Chargers won the third quarter 12-9 with a better defensive and rebounding effort according to Lutz.

“We had a much better effort in the second half,” Lutz said. “We had chances and our offense got the shots we wanted. We had some good things happen that we can build on going into our sectional.”

North Montgomery got the lead down to nine points on a couple of occasions in the second half but could not score to shorten the deficit. The Chargers won the second half 29-28.

Greencastle (17-6) hit 13 3-point baskets and 11 3-point baskets and were 7-of-10 from the free throw line in the win.

North Montgomery (8-14) was 5-of-11 from behind the arch and only attempted five free throws with three makes.

The Chargers were led by Kelby Harwood’s 24 points and Cam Enlow’s 12. Colin Zachary continued to contribute off the bench with seven points and seven rebounds.

Sam Gooch led Greencastle with 17 points. Nathan Sutherllin and Trevin Long added 14 and 12 respectively.

Greencastle will play next in their own sectional at 6 p.m. Friday against Tuesday’s winner of Parke Heritage and North Putnam.
