Chargers complete sweep of Athenians
Homestanding North Montgomery defeated Crawfordsville 12-2 in five innings for a Sagamore Athletic Conference win on Thursday.
Charger pitcher Piper Ramey allowed just one Athenian hit while striking out eight.
Ramey also was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and triple. The senior scored two runs and had one RBI.
North Montgomery’s other multiple hit player were Blair Nichols and Kendra McClamroch each with two RBI.
Madison Martin recorded the one Athenian hit.
Crawfordsville (2-19, 0-11 SAC) played at Seeger on Friday and will host Frankfort on Monday. North Montgomery (14-7, 6-5 SAC) plays at Rossville Saturday and will host Tri-West on Monday.
Mounties sweep Lebanon
Southmont defeated Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Lebanon at home 12-6 on Thursday to complete the conference sweep this week.
South’s Mallory Mason led a 15-hit Mountie offense by going 3-for-4 scoring two runs and recording three RBI.
Ella Barry was 2-for-3 and scored two runs to join multiple hit Mounties Anna Stokes, Jayden Dagley, Kenzie Clate, Catie Himes and Kendall Priebe who had two hits apiece.
Barry pitched all seven innings for the win.
Southmont (14-7, 8-3 SAC) will play Monday at home against SAC leader Western Boone (15-4, 11-1 SAC) and will travel Tuesday to Western Boone.
BASEBALL
Chargers down Athenians
North Montgomery defeated Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Crawfordsville 17-7 in six innings at home on Thursday. The Charger offense produced 16 hits, including six for extra bases, against four Athenian pitchers.
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. The big hit in the inning came from Cayden Keller who hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence. Other extra base hits in the inning came from Aiden Ambriz-Cruz who had a triple and Nolyn Brown who had a double.
Charger Tucker Hinds was 2-for-2 including a homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hinds scored four runs and had two RBI.
Crawfordsville’s Matt Miller led the nine-hit Athenian attack. The catcher was 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Athenian Mason McCarty had one hit, a double, for the only extra base hit for Crawfordsville.
Charger pitcher Cade Cole picked up the win by surrendering seven runs on eight hits in five innings. The righty struck out four.
North Montgomery (14-7, 6-5 SAC) plays Saturday at Rossville (17-4) and at home Monday versus Tri-West (15-4, 10-1 SAC). Crawfordsville (8-10-1, 5-6 SAC) played Friday at Greencastle (16-3) and at home Saturday against Park Tudor (10-7).
Mounties defeat Tigers
Southmont defeated Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Lebanon 12-3 on Thursday at home.
The Mounties pounded out 13 hits in the game led by Dean McGaughey who was 4-for 4 and scored three runs.
Gunnar Shirk was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Shirk hit his two-run homerun in the bottom of the second inning. The round tripper put Southmont ahead 7-0. The Mounties scored six runs in the second inning.
Mountie Pitcher Phisher Benge helped his cause by going 3-for-4 with three-RBI and scoring three runs.
Benge gave up nine hits and three earned runs in six innings for the victory.
Southmont (4-13, 2-9 SAC) played Friday at Attica (4-13-1) and will host Western Boone (12-9, 8-3 SAC) on Monday. The Mounties travel to Western Boone on Tuesday.
TENNIS
Chargers down Mounties
North Montgomery defeated county rival Southmont 4-1 at home on Thursday. The Sagamore Conference win gives the Chargers a second-place 6-1 SAC record and are 13-5 overall.
Mustangs beat Bison
Fountain Central traveled to Benton Central and defeated the Bison 4-1.
Mustang winners were No. 2 singles Laney Hoagland (6-0, 2-1 ret.) and No. 3 singles Esme Muniz (6-1. 6-1). Also winning for Fountain Central were the No. 1 doubles team of Lilly Peterson and Hannah Prickett (6-0, 6-0) and the No. 2 doubles team of Josie Harshbarger and Savannah Bowers (6-3, 6-3).
Fountain Central will host the Wabash River Conference Tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
GOLF
Chargers drop first dual match
North Montgomery played Thursday at Purdue’s Kamden Golf Course and fell to West Lafayette 172-169.
Neal Jeffery led the Chargers with a 38. Rohen Barnes recorded a 43 and Beckett Martin shot a 45. Isaac Hamby shot a 46.
The Chargers host the Sagamore Athletic Conference Golf Championship at Rocky Ridge Golf Club on Saturday.
Mounties split three-way match
Southmont split a three-way match Thursday with Lebanon and Western Boone. Lebanon won the match with a 163. The Mounties Red team shot a 178 while WeBo shot a 190. The Southmont Gray team fired a 213.
Austin Foley and Carter Ludlow led South with 42 followed by Ethan Hutchison 46, Cole Rhoads and Luc Rabeyrin 48, Hunter Thompson 53 and Kooper Charles 56.
Scores for the Mounties Gray Team were Owen McCutchan 49, Conner Walls 52, Lane Slavens 55, Dax Cottrell 57 and Elijah Cornett 60.
TRACK & FIELD
Mustangs place in WRC meet
Fountain Central placed third in the Wabash River Conference Track Meet and the boys finished in fourth place on Thursday at North Vermillion.
In the girls’ meet, Mustang Bailey Hoagland was the champion in three events. She won the long jump, 400M and 100M.
