FC hosts WRC tourney

Fountain Central held the annual Wabash River Conference singles and doubles tournament on Monday.

Covington’s Malah Bridwell won the singles championship and Fountain Central’s won Hannah Prickett and Lilly Peterson defeated Covington 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to claim the doubles title.

Malah Bridwell (Covington), Jaci McLain (South Vermillion), Alydia Mellady (Fountain Central) and Elise Webb (Fountain Central) earned All-WRC honors. All-WRC honors also were earned by Peyton Brown and Addy Streuer (Covington) and Lilly Peterson and Hannah Prickett (Fountain Central).

Athenians beat Bronchos

Crawfordsville traveled Monday to Lafayette Jefferson and defeated the Bronchos 3-2.

Athenian scores were No. 1 singles Reagan Cox was defeated 3-6, 0-6 and No. 2 singles CC Cox lost 4-6, 4-6.

Crawfordsville’s No. 3 singles Caroline Bowling got her team on the board with a close 6-4, 7-5 (7-6) win.

The Athenian doubles teams swept their matches. No. 1 doubles Isla Seward and Alayna Hall won 6-2, 6-0 and No. 2 doubles Emma Buser and Elliot Baker won 6-1, 6-2.

 

GOLF

Mounties defeats Attica

Southmont played host Monday to Attica at the Crawfordsville Country Club. The Mounties shot 178 and Attica shot 206. 

Scores for the Mounties were Austin Foley 37, Carter Ludlow 42, Ethan Hutchison 49, Luc Rabeyrin 50, Luke Rhoads 52 and Hunter Thompson 54.

 

CHS drops match

Crawfordsville was defeated Monday by Greencastle 170-175.

Tanner Gilland kept his hot streak going by earning medalist with a 38.

Other Athenian scores were Caden Murray 43, Jude Hurt 44 and Henry Hoar 50.

Crawfordsville plays Thursday against Lafayette Jefferson at Battle Ground.

 

Chargers drop 3-way

North Montgomery came in third against Tri-West and Danville on Monday.

Tri-West, one of the top teams in the area, won with a score of 158. Danville shot166 to edge the Chargers’ 168 score.

Charger scores were Neal Jeffery 37, Hamby 41, Beckett Martin 45 and Rohen Barnes 45.

 

SOFTBALL

South drops doubleheader

Southmont dropped a home doubleheader Monday to Sagamore Conference champion Western Boone. The game 1 score was 7-3 and game 2 was 12-8.

In the first game, the Mounties and Stars were tied at 1-1 apiece until Western Boone scored six runs in the sixth inning. Southmont scored one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings but could not overcome the Stars.

Southmont outhit the Stars 9-7 but WeBo had seven unearned runs.

In game 2, the Mounties were leading 8-6 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. WeBo scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the final score lead.

Both teams had 14 hits but the Mounties helped the Stars by making four errors.

South’s Jena Grino was 2-for-3 and Kenzi Clate was 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Southmont (14-9, 8-5 SAC)  will be home Thursday to play North Montgomery (10-16, 4-9 SAC) to finish the regular season.

 

Athenians top Hot Dogs

Crawfordsville led from start to finish Monday at Frankfort. The Athenians won the Sagamore Athletic Conference game 19-9 in five innings.

Crawfordsville scored eight runs in their final at-bat.

The Athenians had 14 hits in the game led by Celeste Moore who went 4-for-5 and scored five runs and collected two RBI and Sabella Moore who was 4-for-5 with three RBI. Molly Pierce had four RBI on two hits.

The Athenians (3-19, 1-11 SAC) were expected to travel Tuesday to Frankfort (0-20, 0-12 SAC) .

 

Bruins sweep Chargers

North Montgomery lost both game of a double header Monday against Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Tri-West. In game 1, the Bruins won 11-0 and in game 2 14-4. Both games were ended by the 10-run rule in the fifth inning.

In the first game, the score was 0-0 after three innings, but the Bruins scored eight in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth inning.

The Chargers had two hits in the lost. One each by Ella McManomy and Jayla Birge.

The Bruins repeated their late inning scoring in the second game. Tri-West led 5-3 until nine runs in the last two innings doomed the home team.

North Montgomery was out-hit 12-5 in the second game.

The Chargers (10-16, 4-9 SAC) play Thursday at Southmont (14-9, 8-5 SAC).

 

BASEBALL

Athenians beat Frankfort

Crawfordsville won 6-4 at home Monday against Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Frankfort.

The Athenians plated five runs in the first inning and never trailed in the game even though they did not score again until the sixth inning.

Crawfordsville had three hits in the game, but two came in their big first inning. The Athenians benefited from two Hot Dog errors and two walks to score their five runs.

Crawfordsville pitcher Jude Coursey cruised through three innings by surrendering just one hit. The senior had a rough fourth inning when he hit two batters, walked one and gave up a grand slam to Hot Dog Matthew Berry to make the score 5-4 Athenians. Berry’s hit was the only hit in the game for the Hot Dogs.

Athenian Ethan Campbell relieved Coursey in the sixth inning and earned the save.

Crawfordsville (10-10-1, 6-6 SAC) was scheduled to play Tuesday at Frankfort (11-11, 7-5 SAC).

 

Mounties drop twinbill

Southmont lost two close games Monday to Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone. The Stars won 5-4 and 3-0.

In game 1, the Mounties led early but the Stars kept close throughout the game. Two runs in the fourth frame and one each in the fifth and sixth inning proved to propel the Stars to win.

Southmont recorded five hits in the game and the Stars had 11.

In game 2, the Mountie offense sputtered with just four hits against Star pitcher Easton Nance who went the distance for the win.

Meanwhile, Southmont pitchers Caden Miller and Ethan Hernandez allowed just six hits.

Southmont (4-16, 2-11 SAC) will host county rival North Montgomery (16-8, 7-6) on Thursday. A Mountie win would deny North Montgomery a county championship.

 

Chargers and Bruins split

North Montgomery and Tri-West battled in two close games Monday at Charger Field. The Bruins survived a late Charger rally to win the first game 3-2. In the second game it was North Montgomery surviving a late Bruin rally to win 5-4.

In the nightcap, the Chargers scored all the runs they needed in the second inning when they plated five runs.

Bruin starting pitcher Lucas Haboush lasted 1.1 innings after surrendering four hits and four runs all in the second frame.

Tri-West started chipping away at the Charger lead by scoring runs in the second, fifth innings to make the score 5-3.

North Montgomery starting pitcher Cade Cole earned the win by pitching 5.2 innings.

Charger Aiden Ambriz-Cruz pitched the final 1.1 innings for the save.

Ambriz led the North offense by going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. 

In the first game Tri-West was able to score two runs in their first at-bat. The Bruins added what proved to be the winning run in the fourth frame.

North Montgomery scored two runs in the sixth inning after two outs. A walk and three straight hits produced the Charger two runs.

North Montgomery pitcher Keaton Brown surrendered five hits and three runs in six innings. Jack Warren was 2-for-3.

North Montgomery (16-8, 7-6 SAC) will travel to Southmont (4-16, 2-11 SAC) with a county championship on the line for the Chargers.

 

Mustangs beat Bethesda

Fountain Central defeated Bethesda Christian 7-6 at home on Monday.

Fountain Central led 4-1 after five innings when things got exciting.

Bethesda put up two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead.

The Mustangs responded with three runs of their own in the seventh inning. Fountain Central had four hits in the last inning including a two-out walk off single by Connor Paxton.

Asher Davis led the Mustang attack by going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs. Ayden Batcheler was 2-for-3, scored two runs and had one RBI.

Fountain Central (5-17) travels Thursday to Delphi (15-9) .
