CHS advances to sectional championship
Crawfordsville defeated North Montgomery 4-1 Wednesday at Wabash College to advance to Thursday’s sectional championship. The Athenians will face Lebanon who defeated the Southmont Mounties 4-1 in the other semi-final match.
After the Mounties won two of three singles matches, the doubles teams determined the eventual winner of the match.
Lebanon secured the victory over the Mounties by winning both doubles matches. Lebanon’s No. 1 doubles team of Beatrice Johnson and Anna Howard won 6-1, 6-2 over Southmont’s Savannah Bradley and Clair Simpson.
With the match score 2-2, Lebanon’s No. 2 doubles team of Lucy Cooper and Allie Niehaus prevailed over Southmont’s Flora Nunes and Cassidy Thomas 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Mountie No. 2 singles Jozee Jones defeated Tiger Gabby Malerich 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 3 singles match Southmont’s Maggie Gilliland beat Lana Halmova 6-4, 6-2.
Southmont’s No. 1 singles Haylee Hall lost to Lebanon’s Lucie Cassis 6-2, 6-2.
In the other semi-final game, the Crawfordsville singles players went 3-0 to ensure the victory over their county rivals.
Athenian No. 1 singles Reagan Cox defeated Katie Merica 6-4, 6-2 and Crawfordsville’s No. 2 singles CC Cox beat Abigail Allen 6-1, 6-4. Athenian No. 3 singles Caroline Bowling completed the singles sweep by defeating Cassidy Thomas 6-1, 6-0.
The championship match was scheduled to be played 5:30 p.m. Thursday at either Crawfordsville courts or at Wabash College’s inside courts depending on weather conditions.
BASEBALL
Athenians complete sweep of Frankfort
Crawfordsville completed the Sagamore Athletic Conference sweep over Frankfort on Wednesday at Grand Park in Westfield. The Athenians won 9-4.
The Athenians, winners of five of their last six games, received a monumental pitching performance from Henry Bannon. The Crawfordsville starter limited the Hot Dogs to six hits while striking out six in six innings.
Ethan Campbell threw the final inning and the Hot Dogs went down in order.
Crawfordsville took advantage of five Hot Dog errors which helped the Athenians jump out to a 9-2 lead after three innings.
The Athenian offense was led by Matt Miller who was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and Jayden Jimenez who was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Jude Coursey had two hits and scored twice.
The win pushed the Athenians over .500 for the first time this season with a 11-10-1 record and 7-6 in the SAC.
Crawfordsville will play at Lebanon (3-22, 1-12 SAC) today and conclude the regular season Monday at McCutcheon.
