Mustangs edge out Athenians
In a battle between two of the top area teams, Fountain Central won a close match 3-2 at Crawfordsville on Wednesday.
With the score tied 2-2, the match came down to the No. 1 doubles teams in a three-set battle.
Fountain Central’s Lilly Peterson and Hanna Prickett defeated Isla Sewell and Alayna Hall 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-4.
In singles play, FC’s No. 1 Alydia Mellady defeated Reagan Cox 6-2, 6-4, and at No. 2 Elise Webb beat CC Cox 6-4, 6-3.
Crawfordsville’s Caroline Bowling defeated Laney Hoagland 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.
The Athenian No. 2 doubles team of Emma Buser and Elliot Baker defeated Josie Harshbarger and Savannah Bowers 6-4, 6-4.
Mavs beat Chargers
McCutcheon defeated North Montgomery 3-2 on Wednesday.
Winning for the Chargers was Cassidy Thomas at No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Avery Gayler and Caelyn Carpenter.
SOFTBALL
Chargers slug past Mustangs
North Montgomery defeated Fountain Central 12-1 in five innings at Charger Field on Wednesday. The Chargers took control early with seven first inning runs and never allowed the Mustangs an opportunity to get back into the game.
North Montgomery had 12 hits in the game.
Charger Sophie Welshimer was 3-for-4 at the plate and had three RBI.
North Montgomery starting pitcher Kendra McClamroch struck out 10 batters and gave up just two hits. The freshman also had two hits with four RBI.
North Montgomery (7-8, 2-6 SAC) played at Lebanon on Thursday. Fountain Central (5-12) played at Attica on Thursday.
Athenians lose to Stars
Western Boone defeated Crawfordsville 16-1 in five innings Wednesday at the Athenian Complex. The Stars pounded out 15 hits and held the Athenians to two hits.
No individual Athenian statistics were available.
Crawfordsville (1-16, 0-9 SAC) will play at 5:30 p.m. today at home.
BASEBALL
Stars defeat Athenians
Western Boone took care of business early in Wednesday’s game at Crawfordsville. The Stars scored eight first-inning runs in a five inning 13-0 Sagamore Athletic Conference victory.
The Stars had nine hits but were also aided by five Athenian errors.
Crawfordsville was held to four hits led by Jude Coursey who had two hits.
Crawfordsville (6-9-1, 4-5 SAC) plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at West Lafayette.
Mustangs lose to Clinton Prairie
Fountain Central traveled Wednesday to Clinton Prairie and suffered a 15-5 defeat in five innings.
The Mustangs gave up one big inning when the Gophers scored nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 11-1.
Clinton Prairie outhit the Mustangs 12-7. Each team committed two errors.
Gopher Ben Schlicher was the winning pitcher. Schlicher pitched three innings and struck out three.
Fountain Central (4-14) played Thursday at Attica.
GOLF
Chargers squeak by Gophers
North Montgomery defeated Clinton Prairie by one stroke Wednesday at Rocky Ridge. The Chargers had one of their worst outings of the season but still managed to pull out a 178-179 win.
Charger Neal Jeffery was medalist with a 43.
Other Charger scores were Beckett Martin 44, Isaac Hamby 45 and Konnor Koopman 46.
