Athenians pick up SAC win over Danville

Crawfordsville defeated Sagamore Conference rival Danville 4-1 on Tuesday. The win puts them one match closer to claiming the coveted SAC championship.

The Athenians won their four matches in dominating fashion. No. 2 singles Wyatt Motz defeated Cole Flick 6-0, 6-4 and No. 2 singles Jude Coursey beat Warrior Landon Kinser 6-2. 6-1.

In doubles action, Crawfordsville’s No. 1 doubles team of Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon beat Liam Stierwalt and Olive Riggs 6-0, 6-0. The visitors No. 2 doubles of Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt defeated Braden Drzakowski and Lude Stidam 6-3, 6-2.

“It feels good to pick up another conference win,” Athenian Coach Craig Brainard said. “I am proud how our team continues to improve night in and night out.”

Crawfordsville will face another SAC opponent today when they travel to Tri-West. The Bruins are in their first varsity tennis season and are coached by former Fountain Central girls softball coach Ric Walke.

 

Mounties knock of Trojans

Southmont hosted Covington on Tuesday and defeated the Trojans 3-2.

Mounties No. 2 singles player Caden Allen defeated Carson Schaeffer 6-4, 6-4.

Southmont’s No. 1 doubles team of Owen McCutchan and Dean McGaughey defeated Michael Norton and Brody Goodrich 6-1, 6-1. The Mounties No. 2 doubles team of Mikey Harden and Alex Garcia won over Ben Stewart and Grissom Cope 6-3, 6-0.

South’s No. 1 singles player Gavin Downey was defeated by Urban Roarks 1-6, 1-6 and No. 3 singles player Cory Colton lost to Luke Holycross 4-6, 5-7.

Southmont (5-8) next plays at Greencastle.

 

Hot Dogs get by Chargers

North Montgomery (6-7, 2-3 SAC) lost a home match 2-3 to Frankfort on Tuesday.

Charger Beckett Martin lost a marathon No. 1 singles match against Frankfort’s Jackson Ray. Scores were 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7).

In the No. 2 singles match, Charger Cade Cole dropped was defeated by Kelby Santos 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.

North’s No. 3 singles player Dane Elliott cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jack Michael.

The Chargers picked up a win at No. 2 doubles when the team of Keaton Brown and Cayden Keller defeated Landon Stewart and Sam McAtee.

At the No. 1 doubles match, Chargers Austin Biddle and Carter Thompson fell to Isai Jiminez and Charlie Beardsly 3-6, 1-6.

“We had missed opportunities,” Charger coach Devan Plant said. “Hopefully, we learn from this and see (Frankfort) again in the post-season.”

The Chargers played Wednesday at Lafayette Central Catholic and will travel to Seeger today.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Athenians beat North Putnam

Crawfordsville traveled to North Putnam on Tuesday and came home with a win. Scores of the match were 25-8, 25-22, 35-33.

Athenian leaders were Ellie Walker with nine aces. Ally Strickland and Reese Price each recorded nine kills. Price and Emma Buser each recorded 11 digs and Clair Peacock had 26 assists.

Crawfordsville (9-6, 0-1 SAC) will host North Montgomery today before competing in the Shortridge Showdown on Saturday.

 

Chargers sweep Deaf School

North Montgomery defeated the Deaf School of Indianapolis 3-0 on Tuesday to give them some momentum heading into tonight’s Sagamore Athletic Conference and county rival Crawfordsville.

North’s Kaydence Young had 10 kills and four aces in the victory and Hope Delp added nine kills. Piper Ramey had 30 assists and four aces serving. Blair Nichols also contributed four aces while Ayden Braun had 10 digs.

“This was a good win to take us into a big county match against Crawfordsville,” Charger coach Taylor Pierce said.

The Chargers are at Crawfordsville tonight.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

PHHS runners compete at Banks of the Wabash

The Parke Heritage High School cross country team competed in the Banks of the Wabash meet held Tuesday at Riverton Parke.

Kamden Shields and Brooke Mace both finished second in their respective races. David Lacy was third in the boys race.

 

FC teams compete at Bi-County

Fountain Central’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed Tuesday in the Bi-County meet at Attica. The girls’ team finished second behind Seeger and the boys’ finished seventh.

The girls were led by Raley Akers who finished sixth and earned All Bi-County honors. Brailey Hoagland finished eighth and Madi Morgan finished in ninth place. Kaylee Spragg was 12th and Lilly Newlin finished in 13th place.

On the boys’ side, two Mustangs earned All Bi-County medals. Lucas Kirkpatrick finished in third and Brandon Pigg completed the course in seventh place.

The Mustangs will be in action on Saturday at the Greencastle Tiger Cub Invitation.

 

SOCCER

Sheridan downs Chargers

North Montgomery boys’ soccer team lost 9-3 to Sheridan on Tuesday.

Freshman Joseph Padron did record a hat trick with three goals. Freshman Sam Woolwine added one assist.

In a schedule change, North Montgomery played Lebanon at home Wednesday. They will travel to Tri-West on Monday.
