Prom dress event to benefit kids charities

Prom season is here and a local organization is helping girls find the perfect dress — for a good cause.

The nonprofit Crawfordsville Country Club Kids Charity Organization will offer new and unworn prom dresses during an event from 1 to 5 p.m. April 11 at the Country Club. A goodwill donation is suggested.

Proceeds benefit the organization’s Coats for Kids program, which in 2019 gave nearly 200 coats to children from all three Montgomery County school districts.

Money will also go to Mountie Mission, which received 300 pounds of meat from the organization at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic to give families.

The dresses were donated by the Lafayette Macy’s store. After stores were shut down last year due to the pandemic, the department store chain made its entire collection of prom dresses available to nonprofits.

Kids Charity Organization board member Kerrie McClaskey, a Macy’s employee, applied for dresses on behalf of the charity. The group received nearly 100 dresses.

“I hope there are kids that are needing dresses [and] that they can definitely come,” McClaskey said.
