Ramona Pearl Hallett, 92, passed away Thursday morning, Dec. 5, 2019, at Carmel.

Born Jan. 19, 1927, at Alamo, she was the daughter of the late Roy Everett Thompson and Ruth May (Weir) Thompson.

Ramona’s family moved around Montgomery County while she was growing up. She started school at Alamo, moved to Linden, then New Richmond, and finished at Crawfordsville in 1945.

Ramona and Paul Leslie, her husband of 54 years, were delivered by the same doctor a month apart. After he delivered Paul Leslie, the doctor came for a house call to check on Ramona, who was born first, and reported that “I delivered a fine boy to Alva and Stella Hallett, perfect for your girl here.” Nineteen years later, they were married.

Always modest and unassuming, when asked how she felt about her life, Ramona said, “Well, I really didn’t do anything important. I was just a farm wife.” Those who knew her best begged to differ with her. She was a steadfast member of the Alamo Christian Church and Waynetown Christian Church, a member whose smile and working hands did much for her community. She could always be relied upon to make meals for the bereaved, the needy, or events at the church. “That’s the way we did things,” she said. “We took care of those folks that needed it. There was no question. We would just get together and see how the need could be taken care of. You can never do too much when you’re doing for other people.” She was known to send cards weekly, or even daily, to those who were housebound with illness or just sad because of an event in their lives. She did this with no fanfare or recognition. She said, “Oh yes, I just wanted to put a little sunshine in their day.”

Ramona was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 424, in Alamo. She also was a lifetime member of the Alamo Ladies’ Aid, through which she did much service in the community. She was a lifelong member of the Montgomery County Home Demonstration Club, an association that she greatly enjoyed, as it was held in the various homes of her friends throughout the county.

During two brief years at Copper Trace Assisted Living in Westfield, she made more friends and still offered service by praying for those she met who needed healing of the heart or body. She was an amazing servant of God and could be depended upon to pray regardless of the circumstances.

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ruth Thompson, her husband, Paul Leslie Hallett, and her brothers, Gerald and Lewis Thompson.

She is survived by son Stephen Leslie Hallett (Janet) of Hillsboro; daughters, Susan Lynn Wynne (Chuck) of Crawfordsville and Sara Louise “Sallie” Hallett-Thompson of Westfield; four grandchildren, Jill Dervenis (Greg) of Fishers, Gavin Hallett (Jennee) of Westfield, Emma Bowman (Daniel) of Indianapolis, Zachary Thompson (Amanda) of St. Paul, Minnesota; and five great-grandchildren, Braden and Trey Hallett, Matthew and Michael Dervenis and Norah Bowman.

A funeral service will be held to commemorate Ramona’s life at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 at Family and Friends Funeral Home, 9700 N. State Road 55, Wingate, with Pastor Chris Lawler officiating. The family will receive visitors prior to the service 1-3 p.m. Interment will immediately follow in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery, U.S. 136, Waynetown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alamo Christian Church, 208 Madison St, Alamo, IN 47916.
