Led by sports editor Jared McMurry, the Journal Review staff of Bob Cox, Barry Lewis, and Jeff Nelson compiled a list of athletes from the decade and then voted on the list to select 12 girls and 12 boys plus 10 honorable mention athletes for each gender. The girls list is as follows in alphabetical order.
Brynn Anderson
The 2019 North Montgomery graduate and three-sport athlete earned the Inaugural Journal Review Career Achievement award this past summer. Anderson led the Chargers on the pitch, in the pool, and on the track.
She was the backbone of the North Montgomery defense in soccer, leading the Chargers to a pair of winning seasons in 2017 and 2018. In swimming she owns a record in the 400 freestyle relay, and in track she was a four-time Sagamore Conference champion and regional qualifier in the 4x400 relay.
Anderson is now an undergraduate student at Hope College in Michigan.
Kassidy Bonebrake
The 2014 Crawfordsville graduate is best known for her dividing her time amongst four sports — volleyball, basketball, softball, and tennis.
During her senior season Bonebrake led the Athenians to a third-straight tennis sectional title with No. 1 doubles partner Lizzy Katzenberger. She was also one of Crawfordsville’s top hitters in softball throughout her four-year career. A vision that many Athenian fans remember is all the times Bonebrake would leave the tennis courts following her match and walk to the softball field for another contest.
Bonebrake played in 86 off 88 sets her senior year in volleyball, helping the Athenians to a 22-9 record, leading the way with 506 digs. On the basketball court she led Crawfordsville as a senior averaging 16.8 points per game, and was a first-team academic all-state selection.
Bonebrake went on to play basketball at Lake Land College in Illinois and Montevallo University in Alabama.
Kelsi Byrd
The 2013 North Montgomery graduate is best known for her skills as a basketball player for the Chargers.
Missing more then half of her sophomore season with a torn ACL, Byrd still cracked into the 1,000-point club during her senior season. She finished with 1,047 career points, 561 rebounds, and 352 assists.
During her senior season Byrd averaged 16.6 points per game, 7.3 rebounds, and 6 assists and led the Chargers to a 16-7 record and trip to the sectional championship.
Byrd went onto IUPUI where she had a four-year career.
Sidney Campbell
The North Montgomery junior is only a little over halfway through her high school athletic career, but well on her way to going down as one of the best athletes to come from Montgomery County.
Campbell owns every offensive record both season and career for the Charger girls’ soccer team, leading North to three-straight winning seasons.
As a sophomore, she won both the 50 and 100 freestyle swimming sectional titles, and is a member of the North Montgomery track and field team as a sprinter and hurdler.
Kelsey Dugger
The 2018 Southmont graduate was a four-sport athlete competing in cross country, soccer, swimming, and track and field — earning 16 varsity letters.
As a senior Dugger won the Sagamore Conference meet in cross country, and qualified for her third IHSAA semi-state.
Following the regional her senior year, Dugger played that night in the soccer sectional championship — helping the Mounties to their first sectional title in school history.
Dugger now competes in cross country and track and field at UIndy.
Lacey Garrett
The 2015 Crawfordsville graduate is one of only five Athenian girls’ basketball players to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.
During her senior season Garrett averaged 18.7 points per game, 5.4 rebounds a contest, and 5.4 assists.
Garrett also had a four-year volleyball career, and during her senior campaign she led the Athenians with 458 digs.
Garrett went on to have a four-year basketball career at Taylor University, where she helped lead the Knights to a conference championship and deep run in the national tournament during her senior season last winter.
McKenzi Jordan
The 2014 Southmont graduate was a four-time Journal Review softball player of the year.
During her senior season, Jordan led the Mounties all the way to the state finals, before losing to South Spencer 1-0.
Jordan hit .504 that season with 58 hits, 59 runs scored, 39 RBI, and 11 home runs. In the circle she posted a 19-8 record and a 1.53 ERA with 302 strikeouts.
Her senior year accolades earned her a spot on the Indiana All-Star team.
After high school Jordan spent time playing at the University of Southern Indiana.
Lauren Kellerman
The Crawfordsville senior is the second current athlete to make the list.
Just a couple of weeks ago Kellerman became the fifth Crawfordsville girls’ basketball player to eclipse the 1,000-point barrier against West Lafayette.
Last spring Kellerman hit .583 during her junior softball campaign and finished No. 5 in the state with 60 hits.
Kellerman also spent three years as a varsity cross country runner, and was a varsity player this past fall on the volleyball team.
Kelly Kyle
The 2011 North Montgomery graduate was about as dominate as any athlete could be in her two sports.
In volleyball Kyle led the Chargers to a pair of sectional titles. She owns the North Montgomery record for kills with 1,247 for a career, and 679 for a season, which was the second most in the state during her senior season. Kyle was also an Indiana All-Star as a senior.
In tennis, Kyle and her doubles partner Kiera Bonebrake never lost to a county, conference, or sectional opponent. The duo helped the Chargers to three Sagamore Conference championships and four sectional titles. During their senior season, Kyle and Bonebrake finished fourth in the state doubles tournament.
Kyle went on to play volleyball at Butler University, and has won gold medals in the Pan Am Games and World Championships for the United States Deflympic Volleyball team.
Clare McGrady
The 2016 Fountain Central graduate competed in volleyball, swimming and tennis for the Mustangs — plus a year of softball.
In the pool McGrady won 14 sectional championships — qualifying each time for the state finals. She owns seven program records at Fountain Central, and helped lead the Mustangs to four Wabash River Conference championships and three sectional titles. She also owns five conference records.
In tennis, McGrady helped Fountain Central to a three sectional titles during her sophomore, junior and seniors seasons as the Mustangs No. 1 singles player.
McGrady is now an undergraduate student at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas.
Macee Williams
The 2017 Fountain Central graduate excelled in volleyball, basketball, and tennis.
In basketball, Williams finished with 1,721 points — second most in Fountain Central history. Her senior season she scored 551 points, hauled down 341 rebounds (1,203 for a career), and had 120 steals, 72 assists, and 55 blocks that season.
She was an Indiana All-Star and nominated for the McDonald’s All-America team and the Gatorade Player of the Year award.
During her senior volleyball season, Williams had 346 kills, and helped lead the Mustangs to three-straight tennis sectional titles.
Williams is now a junior at IUPUI, where she is the reigning Horizon League Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
Macy Zachary
The 2018 Southmont graduate was a do-it-all athlete for the Mounties.
Zachary holds the Southmont and Montgomery County career goals record with 129, including a record 43 goals in one season. She also helped the Mounties to their first sectional championship in school history in 2017. Zachary lettered 16 times, including four letters in soccer, gymnastics and track and field. She added three letters in cheerleading, and a football letter, where she became the first female to score for the Mountie football team as their kicker. In track and field she was a multi-county champion and two-time indoor state qualifier in the hurdles.
Zachary is currently a cheerleader and soccer player for Heidelberg University.
