Remembering the decade: The top teams

Here are the top area teams of the decade in chronological order

FC Football 2010

Following a 27-7 opening season loss to Southmont, the 2010 Fountain Central football team won 13 games in a row on their way to a second-straight Class A semi-state title, before losing to Lafayette Central Catholic 31-6 in the state championship. The Mustangs averaged 39.2 points per game for the season.

CHS Baseball 2011

The 2011 Crawfordsville baseball team was the lone area sports team to claim an IHSAA state title in the last decade.

The Athenians posted a 29-6 record, and Chris Minks became the first player to ever hit two home runs in the state finals as Crawfordsville defeated Mishawaka Marian 8-3 to win their second Class 3A state title in four years. Crawfordsville’s 382 hits on the season is tied for ninth all time in state history, and 318 RBI are tied for fourth most of all time.

CHS Baseball 2013

Crawfordsville baseball won its third IHSAA Regional in six years in 2013 — posting a 25-11 record, and winning its 10th-straight Sagamore Conference championship.

NM Wrestling 2014

The 2013-14 North Montgomery wrestling team earned their highest placing at the IHSWCA state duals with a second-place finish in Class 2A with a 46-12 loss to Yorktown in the finals. The Chargers also won the IHSAA Sectional at Crawfordsville with seven individual champions.

SM Softball 2014

The 2014 Southmont softball team got on a roll and posted a 23-9 record on their way to a Class 2A state runner-up finish with a 1-0 loss to South Spencer in the championship. The Mounties outscored their tournament opponents 27-4.

CHS Boys Soccer 2012 and 2016

Crawfordsville boys’ soccer produced a pair of regional final teams in the decade.

The 2012 team won the IHSAA Sectional and finished the season 13-7 with a 5-0 loss to Guerin Catholic in the regional final. In 2016, the Athenians claimed a share of the Sagamore Conference and finished the season 12-4-2 with a 3-2 overtime loss to Heritage Christian in the regional final.

SM Girls Soccer 2017-19

The Southmont girls’ soccer team put together a run of three-straight sectional titles to end the decade. The Mounties won 28 games over the three-year span.

SM Girls Golf 2019

The Southmont girls’ golf team dominated their competition in 2019. The Mounties won their first sectional title in school history by shooting a 357 at Harrison Hills Golf Club. They also set school records with the best 9-hole round with a 166 at Ravines Golf Course, and best 18-hole round with a 344 at Cool Lake Golf Course.

CHS Boys Swimming Dominance

The Crawfordsville boys’ swim team dominated the decade. The Athenians won six of the decade’s 10 sectional championships.

CHS Girls Tennis Streak

The Crawfordsville girls’ tennis program was the only area team to win five-straight sectional titles in the decade. The Athenians won the local IHSAA sectional championship in 2012, 13, 14, 15, and 16.
