Robert I. Burgner Jr., 85, of Veedersburg passed away at 2:15 p.m. ET Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023, at OSF Healthcare in Danville, Illinois.

Robert, also known as Bob or Bud to some, was born May 29, 1937, at Crawfordsville, the son of Robert I. Burgner Sr. and Charlotte Hetfield (Schwin) Burgner. He married Donna Marie Hunt on Nov. 24, 1963, at Indianapolis.

Surviving family include: his wife, Donna Marie Burgner, Veedersburg; son Robert I. (Stephanie) Burgner III, Carmel; daughter Lynda (Rob) Tela, Clermont, Florida; sister Barb (Jerry) Snelling, Veedersburg; grandchildren, Andrew Burgner, Ashley Burgner, Allyson Tela and Kelly Tela.

Bob graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1955, and went on to attend Purdue University and graduate from Indiana State University. He had served his country in the Indiana National Guard and was also a member of the Veedersburg United Methodist Church.

In November 1963, he was hired by Ford Motor Co. as a district parts and service manager, where he stayed until 1978 before buying G.R. Pittman Ford in Hillsboro and moving it to Veedersburg. He owned and operated Burgner’s Garage, including the added Ford Dealership in Veedersburg for the next 44 years. The garage business was started by his grandfather in 1911 and is still operating today. His son and grandson will continue this legacy.

Bob served his community as a member of the Veedersburg Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years where he served as assistant chief and department secretary. He also served as Tri County president and was an instructor for the Indiana State Fire School. He was currently serving as an advisory board member for the township trustee.

Bob was also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge #491 in Veedersburg.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Veedersburg Fire Department. Visitation will begin at noon and continue until the time of service. Masonic service will be provided by F & AM Lodge #491 and military honors will be performed by American Legion Post #288. Burial will be at a later date at Rockfield Cemetery near Veedersburg.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Veedersburg Fire Department.
