Sam Smith, 90, of Crawfordsville passed away Friday morning, Dec. 4, 2020, at home.

Sam was active in the community. He served as a Republican Precinct Committeeperson, drove the VA van and was a member of Kiwanis and the Shrine Club. He served in the Army Reserves for eight years. He was also a member of the country club and played with the Friday senior golf league at the Municipal. He sang with the Smith Brothers Quartet and they were members of the national barbershop quartet organization, SPEBSQSA.

Sam was a member of First United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. He taught music in Springfield, Missouri for five years, then went to Continental Insurance, selling insurance and real estate in Chicago and Indianapolis. Myron Hannah brought him to Crawfordsville, where he worked for McClamroch-Groves and Acme, Shuey, Hauck.

Born Nov. 11, 1930, at Detroit, he was the son of Samuel Alexander Smith Jr. and Mary Ann Crowder Smith. He graduated from Warren (MI) High School and Drury College with a degree in music education. He married the former Marsha Farren on Sept. 13, 1980.

Survivors include: wife Marsha Smith; three daughters, Deborah Scott, Susan (Kent) Harbin and Maribeth (Aaron) Smith; 10 grandchildren, Wesley Stout, Zachary Scott, Jonathan Severe, Matthew Severe, Cody Harshman, Ashley Harshman, Addy Smith, Alex Smith, Clara Smith and Drew Smith; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles R. Smith and Albert H. Smith.

He was preceded in death by daughter Eileen Hopkins; brother Bob and sister Susan.

Sam’s family plans to have a service to remember his life in the Spring of 2021 at the First United Methodist Church. Details will be announced as they become available.
